I am just wondering (what with the 2007's just around the corner) if my carpool stickers can go w/me to a new Prius or can I sell the car ( and I guess the plates, right? ) with the current stickers -- and therefore charge more.

Not that I would, mind you, just wondering what the policy is on that... I saw THIS:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Toyota-Priu...sspagenameZWDVW

Auction: 170017050430

They seem to be selling it WITH the stickers...

Would be worth a WHOLE LOT More money to the buyer, no? (especially when--soon--the stickers will not be available anymore)

My understanding is that the stickers are now part of the car. They have to stay with the car or be removed and thrown away.

However, do the stickers go in the new owner's name .. and if so, does my transponder, and if my transponder does not, then doesn't the new owner get stickers w/o a transponder--which is not right according to the DMV..

Ya understand where i am confused?

The stickers come with a certificate that has the car's VIN and license plate number. I don't think that the registered owners' names are on it; however, I am not about to take an elevator ride to verify this.

When they run out of stickers, I am going to put my car up for sale and use the exorbitant profit I'll be making to buy a new Camry Hybrid.

I bought a used Pri with stickers, and got new license plates. All I had to do was get a special transponder. When I called the FastTrak agency, they told me the previous owner can either:

1) Leave the stickers on the car, and the new owner will be able to register and use (as I am). They must get a transponder if they live in certain areas.

2) Remove them and apply for replacement stickers. That option is on the DMV sticker application form. You have to explain why you are replacing and pay the $8 fee again.

Either way, your FastTrak transponder stays with you.

That's what they told me. My only caveat is that I can only confirm option 1 from personal experience. Anybody else done option 2?

Well, that solves one question. The next is: If they stop issuing stickers cos there are over 75000 hybrids out there with stickers, can I still re-apply for replacement stickers for my new hybrid? I would assume that, yes, i can...but who can tell with the DMV?

:)

(sorry.. Just call this thread: The never-ending question!)

I think you are out of luck on any new hybrid you buy after the stickers run out as they go with the car.
You cannot get replacement stickers for the new car you buy....

I agree. The replacements are for damaged stickers on the car for which the stickers were initially issued, not for a replacement car of the owner.

You cannot sell them without the license and VIN of the car...

BUT if you sell your prius WITH THOSE two things, they are worth MINT if the CA govt. stops handing them out!

Probably along the lines of $3k to 5k surcharge on the price of your prius. I saw a 2001 Prius sell for $25k on eBay cos it had the tags!

Only thing is that the stickers expire 1/1/08 unless the CA govt extends it. Whoever is paying a big premium for a car w/the stickers might be paying for only a short term advantage.

The stickers are assigned to the car by VIN number and aren't transferrable. Whoever owns the car owns the stickers. (I don't know about the transponder, that may be another thing.)

I am hoping they do extend the 1/2008 deadline. I'm looking at possibly getting the new design 2009 in fall 2008. Even though I won't be able to get stickers for the new car (I don't really use the HOV lanes that much) I'm hoping the fact that my 2005 Prius has the stickers will make it more desirable when it comes time to sell. But only if they extend the HOV access deadline. If not, not big deal. I can take them off easily.

Who knows? I might be able to sell them on eBay as collector's items. Maybe throw in some other Prius ephemera and make it a "collection".

As far as I know, the stickers go with the vehicle when it is sold. However, the certificate that goes with the vehicle has your name and address on it. Therefore, the new owner doesn't get the certificate (which is a proof for the stickers). So, the new owner must reapply for a new certificate (after getting a FasTrak transponder if one lives in one of the nine counties). Since the quota is secured, there should be no problem getting one even after 75K limit is reached. I searched the google, but failed to find any form in DMV that related to this changing-hand of clean air stickers. One might have to ask DMV for howto. Because of this, a Prius with stickers is surely going to be sold at a higher price.

I've heard dealers sell a 2005 Prius that is 1 year old with like 35k miles for MSRP of a 2006 just because it had the stickers. LoL i would have to think about whether or not to sell, i drive 100+ miles for a work day (Fluctuates because i consult all over the Bay Area) when i'm using I feel like they're worth every penny. But when i'm not.... ... well i could see myself getting 'Green' Eyed and trying to pass them off for a quick buck.

Oh, btw... does anyone know if the stickers are actually linked to your transponder?!
Since it's a confirmed thing that stickers go with the car. Would the transponder have to also?

As I mentioned above, I bought an '05 with carpool stickers, got the special Fastrak transponder and have been using without problems. But this thread started making me nervous, so I just spent 30 mins on phone with CA DMV. The guy I talked to seemed very knowledgeable, and he told me:

The stickers are part of the car, and stay with the car. If someone steals them, you have bodywork done, etc. you can get replacements for those specific stickers. That will be true even after the quota is met. It costs $8 for replacement stickers. You will need the number of your old sticker, so make sure you have it written down somewhere.

If you buy a used car with stickers already on it, the only other thing you may need is the special Fastrak transponder (if you live in certain areas). Either way, you won't need any special paperwork, nor will the DMV issue any new paperwork to you. If the stickers are properly installed and displayed on the car, they serve as their own evidence of compliance. Also doesn't matter if the car comes with license plates or not. The stickers are tied to the VIN.

You are not supposed to take the stickers off your existing car and move them to another car, whether it's your car or anyone elses. They're supposed to stay with the original car, and if they are removed they are supposed to be destroyed. (As might be the case if you had a collision, and just needed to replace damaged ones.)

Them's the rules, as told to me.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Green Speed @ Aug 10 2006, 12:10 PM) </div>
The stickers are not permanently linked to your Fastrak transponder, and it absolutely belongs to you. If you sell your car, you keep your transponder or turn it in. The new owner gets their own, which is an easy thing to do.

So, the next question is: How much did you pay? Was it in excess of a new 2006? Wondering if you got hit for the "Convenience" of having the stickers already.
