Left a message for "danlatu". Will play everything by ear. I'm giving myself until late Sept. to take care of this matter.
Thank you for the replies/support. It does mean a lot! :)

And yes, I take care of the cars I've owned. It's a investment that I have to protect the best way possible.

Well its really not my business but i would think 10 times each time i turn it on. That crancking noise i hade was too much. I also had it when sometimes i made a left turn on red right in the middle of intersection.

This (the HG) I know. Once I take the car in Sept. for it's maintenance, I'll decide then.
See if I can work out something with my mechanic, if not then I may consider going to Prius Express, etc.
The CASH ONLY is the caveat for me.

There's no obvious idle or difficult start up. Maybe a slight sound, but nothing that is disturbing. Catching the HG in it's early stages.

    You did!
    Trying to limit my driving.

By the way, I called my mechanic and it sounds like for a HG job they send the head out to be resurfaced and checked, basically
a HG rebuild. That and to check the cylinders he quoted me $3600.
Another referred mechanic said that if the HG work was to be done it could potentially lose compression causing the engine to burn oil
and cause damage to the pistons.
I throw my arms up in the air at this point!

Things I know from my engine tear down. The head gasket set runs about 160. The main head bolts run about 90 from Toyota or 55 if you can find aftermarket. The cam bridge bolts run about 30. The oil and filter run about 40(depending on brand). The antifreeze is about 20 a gallon(buy 2 to be safe) Spark plugs are 7-14 a piece, depending on brand. So at 800 to do the job, either this guys time isn’t worth anything to him, or he knows a shortcut or three to get the job done.

I'm looking at a local Prius that has antifreeze in the oil. I’ve been asked by the owner to shoot them a price. I’m not sure I’m willing to tackle the job again.

I think it's time to learn how to do it yourself.

I always establish a baseline for comparison ;).

I check our cars oil level and 12 volt battery voltage every Saturday morning after they have sat overnight. It’s now a routine I have maintained for years and takes all of 5 minutes since I’ve added an oil catch can check to the docket:).

If you have a fear or incling of a head gasket failure, I’d keep a similar check on the engine coolant too;).

    Hope that helps(y).

3600$ for a head gasket, not worth it. Go pick this engine up in north hollywood. Running lean will destroy an engine, too much heat will kill main/rod bearings and fry rings because oil breaks down from heat.

Well, I have to say that the $800 quote comes across like a quick fix for the HG issue.
Then being told that the HG repair could lead to a engine compression issue and possibly cause oil to burn?
Somehow, the general "mechanics" consensus gives me the impression that the HG could lead to engine issues down the road.
With 220K miles on my Prius this car's longevity won't be forever. The repairs/engine replacement, etc.. are costly than average consumer vehicles.

I'm not in a financial and work position to spend $1000's on major vehicle repairs or a new/used engine.
Looking at the crossroad and seeing what road to take.

Used engines are available for 800 and up. Labor to put it in around 600, unless you do it yourself. Fluids and incidentals figure 150.

Time and skills are the main factor. Honestly, messing with a "computer car" is something I will leave to the pros.
Also, I don't have another vehicle to drive with and being based in the mountains you will need wheels.

I've been checking the coolant level first thing in the AM before I drive.
It's been remaining with minimal/no drop in the coolant level.

My car drives great and not really burning any oil. 3600 is too much. If a mechanic talks to me like that i'd stay away. Im just optimistic bout toyota engines and rhe fact you changing oil every month. The possibility that engine is no good is always there theoretically. I would change the hg. Worth the try but not 3600. Maybe 1500 or less.

Theres another place you can try.
310-4268432 his name is avi its by western x exposition. This is an honest mechanic
I forgot the name of the shop but its behind the 76 gas station. I cant write too much bout him but i owe him a lot for his honesty that one time dealer ruined my car computer and asked me for $4000 to repair it. Avi fixed it for nothing. It was all the dealers mess. Try him.

I lost count of how many head gaskets I've changed. I have yet to see one fail a second time. Good luck with the $800 job. I have never changed a head gasket without changing the water pump as well, which I doubt is included for $800.00. Who's fault is it going to be when the old water pump fails and takes the new head gasket with it?
