Weights attached to frame??

    Ok, thanks guys. I wasn't making these claims, another prius owner was. I just wanted your opinion on what the purpose of those parts may have been.

    I put my air horn in the space between the condenser and the grille. Lots of room there. Just take the top black plastic cover off the rad.

    Lots of cars use resonance dampening. Some are heavy some are not. On my Crown Vic for example there's a 40 pound weight on each of the exhaust manifold pipes before they hit the cats. There on a pendulum type thing.

    Additional weight in the form of.... well.... weights hung off the frame will do nothing for safety and have the potential for making it less safe. Many cars have weights bolted to the frame and many times it's in front of the front axle-line and as far forward as the frame goes, and many times with a rubber damper on it as well to help damp oscillations. I removed the one on my Acura TL and in park there was no difference but at idle in drive, there was a small bump in vibration in the cab (extra load from the drag of the converter). Once the AC kicked on in drive, there was an unmistakable increase in vibration in the cabin. This damper was not included on the manual transmission models, since they lacked the additional load of the converter at idle in drive at a stop. This could also be to damp frame/body oscillations in certain conditions. Sometimes just the right combination and type of bumps can make the chassis ring and the weights can lower its resonant frequency.

    I think these steal plates really are for sound deading! And if a little weight works, why not a lot? So I went to the gardening store and loaded up and I can say for certain, that the car does indeed ride quieter now. I think I'm just gonna put blankets over the pavers and call it done. Car is way quieter now! Way more fun!
