An extra $22 per reapplication for those that have the red from now until then? (Just a guess to be honest).

Zero chance, for the following reasons:

    1) "Overloading" HOV lanes - hence the rolling expiration going forward.
    2) At the time of purchase and issuance, there was zero expectancy that HOV access would be extended beyond 12/31/18.
    3) Increased value of used cars cuts into the sales of new cars. There are economic forces/interests at play.
    4) Despite #2, the state already granted an additional 3 years if your sticker was issued after 1/1/17.
    5) Small # of constituents that would benefit in comparison to all of the facts above.

Yes, the green stickers on my 2012 plug-in cannot be renewed so I will ride it out till the end for a near 7 year run in the HOV lane, and then apply for stickers for a used 2015 plug-in that I recently picked up (previous owner never applied for stickers) after 1/1/2019 so that it will be HOV-eligible to 2023.

I'm sticking with the gen 1 Prius Plug-in - the car I picked up is a lease-return 2015 with 21k miles. I decided to stick with the gen 1 because in my experience they are reliable - the 2012 plug-in I'm still commuting in has had zero issues in nearly 170k miles, and it still runs as new. Additionally, I was looking for the most bang for my buck, a used gen 1 still retains value, but is less expensive than a new car. And I like that I can fit 3 passengers in the rear passenger area. I also considered a new Audi A3 e-tron, but given the price and reliability concerns, the used 2015 plug-in was a great alternative.

So if we get a red sticker today, are we guaranteed til at least 1/1/2022? But probably have to re-apply at some point?

Yes that is my understanding, too.
Presumably red is the next sticker color, and you will just keep them with some kind of renewal process, to be announced.

How do you reapply ?? The application form only shows new registration or replacement for lost or damaged or update owner information

If you already have stickers there’s no renewal

Yes, they likely will provide instructions prior to end of year on how 2017+ green/white stickered cars can reapply for new stickers, which will likely be the red stickers they are currently issuing.

I have been searching for a used PiP without stickers so I can get stickers until 2022.

I found one in another state that I'm having a friend check out for me. Does anyone foresee any issues with me getting stickers for a car I purchased out of state that has obviously never had carpool stickers?

Double check the FAQ's but I think used Plug-in (no stickers) works if vehicle on the list, and PiP is on there.

    CURRENT PROGRAM
[IMG]Red Clean Air Vehicle Decals The California DMV is now issuing a new "Red" decal for all qualifying vehicles pursuant to CVC §§5205.5 and 21655.9 that will be valid until January 1, 2022. The Red Clean Air Decal has the same eligibility requirements that were required for the Green and White decals. There are income requirements and other details regarding this new California Clean Air Decal program.

Owners of vehicles issued a Green or White HOV decal after January 1, 2017 may re-apply in 2019 for a new Red Clean Air Vehicle Decal that will expire on January 1, 2022.

All vehicles in the chart below that were not issued a green, white, or red decal prior to January 1, 2019, will qualify for the new Clean Air Vehicle decal. Information on the color of the new sticker and application date and process have not yet been released.

PAST PROGRAMS - STICKERS CURRENTLY VALID
[IMG]White Clean Air Vehicle Decals are no longer being issued, but are valid until January 1, 2019 (per AB 266). These stickers were issued to an unlimited number of qualifying Federal Inherently Low Emission Vehicles (ILEVs). Cars that met these requirements were typically certified full zero emission vehicles (100% battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles) and some very clean compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles.

[IMG]Green Clean Air Vehicle Decals are are no longer being issued, but are valid until January 1, 2019 (per AB 266). These stickers were issued to an unlimited number of qualifying plug-in hybrid vehicles certified to California's Transitional Zero Emission Vehicles (TZEV) or Enhanced Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (AT PZEV)* standards and meeting minimum all-electric range requirements.

If you're like me and purchased your Prime in February of 2017, you have to wait until the end of 2018 or beginning of 2019 to apply for the new, apparently red sticker, that will be good until 2022. You may therefore suffer a "no HOV access" period of time while they're processing your application. People buying a Prime now can apply now, and will receive the RED sticker "now", good until January 2022. What a pain!

Are the color of stickers being issued now and going to be issued after this year end BOTH are RED color? I am confused. I guess the current RED stickers are also getting expired by the end of this year right?
