I tend to agree... if the existing plug can simply be modified with a super strong magnet, the oil at the bottom is less turbulent and should be the best place to collect particulates.

    Small magnets are cheap.

I just ordered the magnetic drain plug.
I will also try to attach a hard drive magnet which are neodymium (super strong) to the outside of the oil filter.
Can't hurt it's on the outside.
I'll report back at my first 1000 miles oil change.

    my2cents.

Sump plug magnets are a good idea, but providing the oil filter is doing it's job the only thing they protect is the oil pump as this is between the oil sump and the filter thus pumping unfiltered oil. Damage to the pump can usually be seen in a dismantled pump as scoring, this damage will lower oil pressure and flow. Strong magnets do there best job if placed on the outside of the sump immediately below the oil pick up tube and once fitted should not be removed.

Why should they not be removed?
