Has anyone had a problem with the clutch that engages the electric motor when you let off the gas or put on the brake? I get a scraping metal on metal sound, it comes and goes like a piece of metal is getting between the faceplate and clutch sometimes??
I'm intrigued - are you talking about a PRIUS - not a PRIME (which has a one-way clutch)? Because there is no clutchplate as such. There is a Clutch-Damper Assembly, but I'd doubt that's going to be a problem. I wonder if it's not the actual brakes?
That’s just the sound the car makes in regen mode. The ‘scraping metal’ sound was much more apparent in my gen 3
I' I've never heard a scraping metal sound. The Regenerative braking is more a whirring of the generator - like a spaceship in some situations. But if you brake harder, it makes a different sound. Letting the accelerator off, generally the ICE will stop, and the MG1 and/or MG2 will start regenerating - and should be silent other than the whirring of those. Occasionally, the ICE will give a momentary shudder as it either starts (mainly first time after a cold start), but I've never noticed it when it stops.
My 2010 and 2014 prius both made a very audible ‘scraping metal’ sound that could clearly be heard with the window rolled down. I’m surprised this is not discussed at depth on this forum.
There's a thread here about "clicking sound on regen or braking". The conclusion was that bad CV joints can make noise while regening, but be quite during normal driving.
Pardon me butting in but could it just be the noise of the brake pads on a recently rusted disc (rotor) ? You know the way they tarnish after a wet drive or heavy dew overnight but wear off after a few minutes driving.
