My wife drives mostly highway 120ish miles a day and in the past year has picked up 6 rock chips all of which have been repairable but the other day picked one up in a rain storm and it spidered right away. I have been reading that the windshield itself can be replaced by pretty much any reputable glass shop but I was under the assumption that only Toyota can calibrate the safely sensors. But most of these professional shops say ADAS certified... What have you guys done? I got quoted $1000 as a local glassdoctor in town. They say they can calibrate it. Has anyone had luck with a non Toyota safety calibration? Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Do you mind sharing the price and also what brand of glass. I have used Safelite for all of my cars over the years and have had good experience. I always take it into one of their locations even though they will come to your house or workplace. Probably makes no difference but I just can't get used to the idea of my car being worked on in a parking lot.
I'm in SoCal. Safelite just recently quoted me $1,000 for Toyota OEM glass, but I don't think that included labor? I forgot to ask. Aftermarket glass would be half of that, and he said it is just like the factory glass. This just stinks! I've been driving for 45 years, in 2 Camrys and 2 Hondas, and never once got a chip or ding or crack in a windshield! Toyota sure dropped the ball with the Prius glass. Cheap crap.
I had windshield replaced last year on my Prime Premium. It has no HUD and rain sensor, but has forward camera. There was no aftermarket parts then and it is my understanding that there still is no after market windshield available for Prime. I thought Gen4 is the same situation for the aftermarket windshield. At the time of my replacement, genuine Toyota windshield was short supply and had to wait for 3 weeks to be shipped from Japan. Since my insurance covered everything, I don't know exact cost, but I was told verbally the windshield was $680. I had calibration done by a Toyota dealer. The cost $150 was also reimbursed by the insurance.
Will most likely file a comprehensive claim through insurance, $500 deductible Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Are other Toyota models having problems with cracked or chipped windshields? Or is it just the Prius. I just looked at four different Toyota models in the show room. And the windshield size and shape and slant looks very similar on all four models. The Prius glass looks exactly like the Corolla. So I wonder if other models are also having cracked windshields? I still think it's cheap glass, and not the size or shape of the glass. Whatever the reason or the cause, I think it's ridiculous that these things are breaking and cracking so easily. I've been driving for 45 years, with three different brands of cars, and never had even a chip in the front windshield. But my Prius, it seems to get a new little chip or ding once a week! And these are not bad roads I'm driving on.
Don't assume that a handful of people who have reported a chipped or cracked Prius windshield are representing the hundreds of thousands of Prius' owners who have never had a cracked or shipped windshield. We are talking about a small percentage of people here and probably not any more than ant other automaker. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
That is true however it is too early to dismiss either, because most of the comments that we have seen over the past couple of years have a common theme, the owner has been driving in their area for several years, with different cars, with either few or no cracked windshields, then within a few months of buying the Gen 4 Prius they get a cracked windshield. Some people have even had it happen twice already. Of course it could just be coincidence, no way to say for sure, but similar sounding reports keep coming in. As for percentages it's the percentage of people on PriusChat not the percentage of hundreds of thousands of other owners that is relevant. Owners who are not active on PriusChat could be having the same problem we have no way to know. If it's all just coincidence then we should have seen similar jump-to-conclusions reports when Gen 3 came out. Maybe there were I don't know that was nearly ten years ago and I'm not inclined to do the research But I agree without data or statistics it's all anecdotal at this point.
Be careful what you wish for. Last summer I was browsing priuschat reading a thread about cracked windscreens on the G4 and then the very next day - bang! - my windshield cracked. Replacement was a big hassle and cost $1300 with the dealer radar recalibration. Insurance covered part of this. I filed a complaint w Toyota USA and they offered a $500 promise to pay future Toyota service. Hmmm, I’ve been driving 40 years all of my cars Japanese compacts and never has this happened until now. I don’t think it’s coincidence
I wonder if the low wedge-shaped front end of the Gen 4 airflow could be partly responsible for lifting stones into the windscreen. What do you think?
Been driving 20 years. Have 4 cars now but over 10 in my lifetime and never had a windshield crack on me. I've had the occasional rock chip but I could see the rock flying at me it was that big. Either Toyota cheaped out or the design of the prius is prone to rock chips... Or maybe it's just luck of the draw, but I really doubt it Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Mine cracked last april. Luckily my insurance covered it. Not every shop could do the switch since I had safety cameras, HUD, rain sensor etc, I had to choose from 3 different places closest to me. The windshield had to be ordered from Toyota, no Pilkington or other alternatives available, it came with the top plastic part pre-installed, so they just plugin the camera, calibrate it. The rain sensor seemed to have some adhesive on it. I had a chat with the repair shop dude, he said that the windshield is pretty thin on the gen4 Prius, probably due to weight saving. So that might not have been the last visit there. Everything works fine, so no troubles here.
I live in Kentucky and the insurnace is required to pay the full amount, so I do not know how much it was or what brand it is. I just brought the car to Safelight in the morning and picked it up that afternoon. BTW, they do the camera recalibration in their shop. I asked about that.
The brand should be printed on the lower corner of the glass. I'm curious if it's Toyota or another brand.
I bought my Prius in July and four months later I heard something like a small rock out of nowhere hit the windshield. There was no visible crack I could see in my line of sight from the driver's seat, so I breathed a sigh of relief. But, a couple days later when I was backing out the car from the garage, I noticed a long crack about a foot long on the lower half of the windshield. Within another three days, the crack was 3/4 the way across the width of the windshield. So, I just picked up the car from Safelite today. They did replace the windshield and they said they calibrated the camera with the same software and procedure that Toyota uses, but when I started up the car to drive it home after the repair I got an alert message on the dashboard display. The message said, "Pre-Collision System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer". When I showed the message to the Safelite tech, he said there was nothing he could do and that I should take it to the dealer. I'm with others that have said this windshield cracking seems to be unusual. I've had many other cars over the decades with no or at least relatively minor cracks that were easily fixed before the entire windshield needed to be replaced.
