Thanks. If it is, I’ll apply for the Decal sticker before 01/01/19.

I would apply for the red stickers immediately. You never know what's going to happen in the future. As others have suggested, they may end up just authorizing existing red stickers through a certain date. They could also change the program somehow and only give priority to those who already have stickers. The fact is there's no reason not to apply. The cost is minimal, and, if you're worried about having to peel the red ones off and put others on, you can always just not apply the red ones until you see what happens in January.

It depends on how soon you want to have access to the carpool lane and for how long. Apply now and you'd have access from about mid July (prob would receive stickers by this time) through 1/1/2022. If you apply after 1/1/19, then you'd have access from about 2/1/19 through 1/1/2023. Congrats on your new Prius!

I think you meant to 06/14/18 and 06/15/18 at the end there. You got them much more quickly than I did.

    Woohoo copied from dmv website
    Red decals valid till 2022

In March 2018, the department began issuing a new single-color red decal for qualifying vehicles pursuant to CVC §§5205.5 and 21655.9. The new red decal will be valid until January 1, 2022, and are issued to vehicles that meet California's super ultra-low emission vehicle (SULEV) standard for exhaust emissions and the federal inherently low-emission vehicle (ILEV) evaporative emission standard, as well as vehicles that meet the state’s enhanced advanced technology partial zero-emission (enhanced AT PZEV) vehicles or transitional zero emission vehicle (TZEV) standard. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) fueled vehicles may also qualify. Visit ARB's website at www.arb.ca.gov for additional information on vehicle eligibility.

    Thanks.

Sounds like they changed their policy on the red decals. Before, the official web page said that they expired at the end of 2018 and the owner needed to apply for a new decal to extend them until 2022. Now they say that the red decals are good until 2022.o_O

When the new decals are issued, which don't distinguish between alternative fuel vehicles (white decals) and PHEV (green decals), I wonder how that will work at venues like the Golden Gate Bridge, which extend carpool privileges to white decals but not green ones

Do you need to also have a Fastrak in conjunction with the HOV decals to use the HOV Lanes?

Not in California, at least not in San Diego. In fact, if you do have a Fastrak and you drive lanes like the express lanes on the 1-15, you have to put your transponder in the little bag they give you or you'll get billed the going rate that single-occupancy drivers pay for using the HOV lanes. I'm sure the same applies to anyone using the those lanes with two or more people in the car. Either the decals or the multiple people allow you to use the express lanes fro free, however, if the Fastrak system reads a transponder, it will charge you. And one single drive in those I-15 express lanes can cost quite a bit, I believe (up to $8 to $16, depending on traffic congestion).

Discrimination is fine in San Francisco, as long as it is for an approved "progressive" cause.

What did you say on the form? It asks what you are applying for, original stickers or replacement decals.

    Which did you check?

    Thanks

It really depends on the particular road. In LA and in the San Francisco Bay Area, there are roads that recognize Fastrak transponders that have a switch which says how many people you claim are in the car, and if you have the clean-air decals, you are allowed to set it to 2 or 3 even there is only one person in the car. On these kinds of roads, the toll varies (or is free) based on how many are in the car, and you don't have to hide the transponders.

Your Fastrak transponder has a switch on it?

I was driving my 2017 prime with green sticker in Bay Area today and found this older plugin Prius with the red sticker. I’m not trying to give this owner any problem. Can anyone confirm if this is a legit red sticker for older plugin Prius?

My green sticker will be expired end of this year and hope I can renew mine too..

It’s legit if the owner never registered for a green sticker;).

Probably bought it out of state then registered it for the stickers (y).

So Which new red sticker is the govt issuing? It’s hard to distinguish between old vs new red stickers on the road.
