    Hello all,

    Just looking for some insight/recommendations/advice:

I purchased a 2018 Prius Prime Advanced, 33k out the door, less than a week ago.

With the finance gentleman, I was offered an extended warranty:

8 years, 75000 miles for $2000, $0 deductible ("lower than the employee price")

I asked if he would do the warranty for $1000, and he said yes.

I purchased the warranty on a separate transaction so that the cost would not be included in my financing (avoiding any interest).

I financed through a credit union and they offered a 7-mile, 100k mile warranty for $1040, $500 deductible and GAP insurance, which I declined.

I researched extended warranties on prius' and asked around and the responses were mixed.

I contacted the finance department today regarding a refund and they have kindly agreed to refund what I paid for the warranty. I didn't experience any negativity with the refund and I'm happy the dealership is helpful in facilitating a refund.

I'm looking for thoughts/recommendations/experiences on the extended warranty.

Should I keep the extended warranty ($1K)?

    Or,

    Should I pursue a refund?

    Thanks for the insight

First, get only the Vehicle Service Agreement from Toyota Financial. Don't get any 3rd party service contract. (These are not warranties no matter what the sales person called it.) If the 3rd party underwriter goes bust, you've not nothing. If you'll sleep well at night only if you buy the extended service contract, shop on line for the best deal. These are great products for the dealership to sell. Zero inventory cost. Profit margin for the dealership. Commission for the finance "gentleman" who is paid only on commission. Hammer them hard on the price.

I'll never buy one. They almost never pay off, and I'll take the risk.

    Toyota says:
"Hybrid-related components, including the HV battery, battery control module, hybrid control module and inverter with converter, are covered for 8 years/100,000 miles. The HV battery may have longer coverage under emissions warranty. Refer to applicable Warranty & Maintenance Guide for details."

    "60 months/60,000 miles (engine, transmission/transaxle, front-wheel-drive system, rear-wheel drive, seatbelts and airbags)."

Basic: "Every Toyota vehicle is supported by a 36-month/36,000-mile limited warranty coverage."
Toyota Online Owners Manuals and Warranty

So...with those service contracts you're considering, what do you get beyond the standard factory warranty? Not a lot.

    and 10/150 in cali.

extended warranty is like any other insurance. a large pool of people pay in for a few who need service. it is really a personal choice.
but prius is so reliable in the years post warranty, i choose not to purchase the extension. save the thousand for a very unexpected repair.
congrats and welcome, all the best!(y)

Sales rep for Toyota here and personally for that price it's a good buy. I purchased a 7/100k for my Rav4 and my Corolla. Recently just bought a Prime on Monday and rolled over my Corolla warranty toward my Prime. They don't really tell you this but those warranties are prorated. So if you end up trading down the road or whatever, you get back what you didn't use. With the amount of toys on the Prime, especially the Advanced Trim, I would say go for it! Your TSS, HUD, etc would all be covered.

I was just told the replacement cost for a Prius Prime's 11" touch screen is in the neighborhood of $4000.
Can anyone confirm this? If true, one of those Platinum Service Agreements just became more justifiable.

I can't confirm it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does knowing headlight replacement is going to cost over $1000. BTW, as long as car continues to run, I would be pleased to have the 11" touch screen gone. I have no need for it. LOL

EDIT: I did a little search. 11" head unit cost more than $4K for parts alone. In fact MSRP for this part is $6077. Holly sxxx!

You need that touch screen even to control the temperature (AC, heater, etc.), the radio, navigation, etc. Were you joking about having no need for that touch screen?

I guess the question is what are the chances of something going wrong with that screen (or other electronic components) in between years 3 and 8? (I guess we could only guess, since it is only the 2nd year this car existed.)

If you read the manual, almost all of essential control functions such as the temperature (AC, heater, etc.), the radio can be done with buttons on wheel and information displayed on MFD. I don't use navigation, Entune, and other completely useless infortainments that is displayed on the 11.6 screen. I have kept that screen display off most of time. That said, I don't know what the consequence of broken 11.6 LED will be. Maybe if LED is broken, MFD does not work either. My take is if the car is 8 years old, and LED is broken and cost of repair is $4000, but the car runs fine without the LED, I would be fine not to fix it and keep driving. BTW, extended warranty will not cover things like broken LED screen by accident or by operator carelessness, which I think are most likely cause of screen damages.

It’s the only way to set the date.

Not sure what "date" but if it is not essential for driving a car, I probably don't care if it displays a wrong date. LOL

I believe the Date needs to be set before you can set a charging schedule. You are also prompted to set the date if it isn’t set and that prompt is on the MFD but you actually set it on the touch screen. At least with the 11” display. My dealer set the date as part of PDI.

I speculate the date needs to be set for the car to know the day of week.

I don't use charge schedule, so that part of function is not needed. The question is, will the car starts and run without date set? I will find out when my 11.6 inch display is broken, then I may not. ;)

@Salamander_King are you aware of the quotes for Prius Prime Platinum extended warranty with 0$ deductible? I think, at some point, I saw your post with all the prices listed but I am unable to find it. I paid $1500+tax ~1600 today for 6 year/100k miles warranty and I am getting a sense that was not a good price.

You might be thinking of this post New Prius Prime Advanced owner - extended warranty/ Toyotacare plus? | Page 2 | PriusChat or some other comments in that thread.
I don't have extended warranty on my PRIME and feels not needed. I was just surprised to see how wide the price ranges on supposedly the same services. Your price seems to be about average??? Who knows. BTW, you can buy those service plan up until the original 3/36 factory warranty expires, and you don't have to buy it from the dealer you purchased a car.

You need to look at what version of the service contract you got. There are multiple versions with multiple coverages, plus the multiple years & miles limitations. It seems to be designed to make the consumer's head spin so they buy whatever the finance guy puts in front of them. As noted above, be extremely wary of any 3rd party service contract. The Toyota Financial Services Vehicle Service Plan is the most reliable (note that they never call it a warranty).

Look back at my posting #2 in this thread. What coverage are you buying beyond what Toyota provides in the factory warranty? Is that coverage worth to you what you're paying for this service contract?

Thanks all of you. I had already bought the Prius two days ago. If I can buy the VSA from a different dealer at a much lower price, can I cancel the existing platinum VSA and buy it again? Also, what is the difference between the Platinum VSA and Toyota Plus care? The former seems more like a warranty but has the word Service in the name while the latter is actually for free service and care. Correct me if I am wrong

I don't see reason not to be able to cancel current one and buy from different dealer later. Just make sure your cancellation is fully honored, and your are receiving a full refund. As I said, you have until 3 years/36K miles warranty expires to buy the extended contract. As for the difference between Platinum VSA and Toyota Plus care, as you said it, former is service agreement (or often referred as extended warranty) to cover repair bills whereas the latter is the scheduled maintenance service beyond the free 3 years/25K miles Toyota Care period. It covers regular scheduled maintenance listed in the booklet, but unless you get extremely good deal on this plan, it is usually not worth the price your pay up-front. Again, Toyota Care Plus can also be purchased anytime up to 3 years/25K miles from any Toyota Dealer.
