    Hi All,

I have been going through the posts on aux input kits and decided to try out one of the cheap ebay kits (see pic below).
I disconnected the single cd player (at the cd player end) and plugged it in but no luck. It doesn't recognise it. Anyone else tried these? Maybe they just aren't compatible. I could send some more pictures of the connections if that helps. I would just use a tape adapter but my tape player is broken!

    Thanks in advance! Screenshot_20180702-202116.jpeg

I'd been eying that product as well. Do you have to play a "blank" CD to get it to work?

Thought it was worth a try for £20!

Well I have completely disconnected the cd player at the moment. I could get another y harness so they are both connected I guess but I am not sure if that would help. Wiring and electronics are not my field of expertise!

I know others have had success disconnecting the single cd player and replacing it with one of these boxes but that was a more expensive unit.

I bought a similar one for the 2002 Town & Country. There was a red wire sticking out of the white connecter.
Bad instructions, but it did kinda say you had to plug that into 12V.
I tapped into a power source that was only on when in the ACC or RUN mode.
It worked fine for a while. But since I bought the Prius I rarely drive it. It sits in the hot sun and I think it
effected it. One day it didn't work, until it sat in the shade for a while. Then It worked! I guess it gets pretty hot inside the van!
I might be someone else, who knows. Maybe I didn't crimp the connections tight enough, but I doubt that. :)
But for $25, it was $75 less than a name brand one. So it was worth a try.
And I kept my tape adapter! I was tired of replacing the belt for the cassette because you completely disassemble the WHOLE
radio assembly just to get to the belt! The 3rd time I found a belt about an inch longer and it has lasted over 2 years.
I don't play cassettes in it and the adapter just spins each spool so the radio thinks there is a tape inside. So no strain.
I would carefully re-read the instructions and check the wiring diagram and see if it says something about and external 12V supply.

Hmm, I think I need to get back in the car and have another go. I think it wasn't getting power because the light on the box did not come on. I assumed that because I was attaching to the y harness (not straight to the back of the head unit), I didn't need to make any mods but that doesn't seem to be the case. Would be nice to get it working so I can post some instructions for others to use!

Here is the important part of the instructions (apologies for typos, my phone grabbed this text from the photo):

    2. Unmount the radio from the dash and find CD changer port
    at the back of radio
3.Plug the USB Car Adapter connector into CD changer port
Semily (For Audi VW Skoda/Seat radio, connect the GND cable to the
    shield of the radio)
    4. Insert USB stick or SD card TIF Card into USB port once the unit
is installed just power on the car radio, you can Press CD button then
to check symbol of LED light being on Meanwhile CDC,EX or CD01
wisplay on the radio screen(Depends on radio type). Now it will
    work normally
    5. After successfully test re-assemble the radio and lead usb and
    aux cable to proper place.

    Important Note:
    1. If there is follows cable on the harness:
A Black -attach it to any metal part of the radio body
    B. Yellow attach it to the power of the car
    C. Red ACC-attach it to ACC signal of the car.
    2. If the radio with existing CD changer, there is need Y-adapter
    Cable
    3. For Audi factory radio of Mini ISO 8P, it is CDC connector is 20p
block connector, in order to install USB car adapterit require to
    connect our 20p adapter cable

Well, your "Important Note" says it all.
    At least 1 and 2.
Does it have a separate Yellow and/or Red cable?
I would "guess" yellow is for usb and red powers it. That's what mine was.
I tried it without hooking it up.
It said to connect it to a wire that was powered all the time. But I didn't want it on all the time.
So I attached it to one that was only powered when the van was on.
You could use a test light to check the power connections on the original connector and find the ACC(hot only when car is powered).

Does the radio function with the adaptor connected? If not, then you'll need to attach a wire from the ACC wire on the original
harness and attach it to the power wire of the adaptor so you are powering the radio and adaptor.
Maybe that is why they say you need a "Y" connector.

A cheap FM adapter has been working well for me :)

I tried those years ago. Volume was WAY too low. I had to turn the radio to full volume.
They when I disconnected, BAM! It only had to happen once before I learned! :)
The cassette adapter worked best for me. It was a pain replacing the cassette belt, but since I put the 1 inch larger belt
in it there was no problem.
This adaptor needs a separate power source. Thus the "Y" adaptor, OR, a red wire coming out of the harness.

    Update:
Tried playing around with the wiring a bit but no luck getting sound. The device does get power without any other mods so that might not be the issue anyway.
I bought a y harness so both cd player and aux adapter can be plugged in. Now I can get it to work BUT only if a cd is playing at the same time or if I then unplug the cd player whilst it is running! This suggests that I somehow need to trick it into thinking the cd player has a disc... Or use a blank cd but I don't really like this option. It does not recognise it as a cd changer or anything like that but I guess I can live without that if I can get over the other issue. If not then I think I might just use an fm adapter even though I don't love them!

I would contact the manufacturer and see what the deal is. Maybe you have a bad unit?
All the device does is send power to the radio telling it to play the audio from the external CD Player.
So the radio switches to that. It doesn't know if it is a cd player or not.
Apparently the radio is not getting the signal.
The adapter is malfunctioning, or not the correct one for you car.
Since it is partially working, I would suggest contacting the manufacture or whoever you purchased it
from and ask them to double check the model numbers to see if you have the correct adapter.
The wiring could be slightly different.
Or your radio is broken and even if you attack the correct deck for your radio it won't work.
All you can do is have then send you another one and double check to make sure it's the correct one.
Or the plug on your radio, or the radio itself is defective.
Maybe you can find someone willing to let you try it on there car. If it still doesn't function, you know the
adapter is either defective or not the correct one.
If it works, then you know it's your radio.
Since it does "kinda" work, I would think maybe it is not the correct one for your radio.
On my Chrysler, even though the radios looked the same, they could have a different name on the cd portion.
I believe mine is RAZ. I can't remember what the other one was RAD I think??? But I seem to recall I needed a
different adapter depending on which radio I had.

Hmm well it never actually said it was for my model in the first place so it was always going to be a bit of a hack! Just haven't figured the hack out yet...

You failed to mention that part!
So you just bought something without checking to see if it was for your radio?
That's like buying a pair of shoes because the are on sale and finding out later they are 3 sizes to small!

Not quite. I bought it knowing that it didn't specify that it was for my radio because if I could get it to work it would be a much cheaper alternative to the other options ! Also knowing that others on this forum have managed to get kit for a later model to work.
I should have been clearer in my original post! I did try and post a link but I wasn't allowed.

If you are electrically inclined and have the knowledge, they you can get it to work. If not,
just order the one for your radio. It's $20! :)

You mean you know of one that is $20 that works (if so please share the link!) or it is only 20 wasted so far?

I believe you are in England? I used this for my search on ebay: (3.5mm AUX MP3 Music Audio Interface CD Changer Adapter for)
Then put in your car model and year after the "for".
I am not sure if this link will work or not but this is for my Chrysler: 3.5mm AUX MP3 Music Audio Interface CD Changer Adapter for Chrysler Dodge Jeep | eBay

Yes that is basically what I did. It is for Toyotas and has the 5+7 connector. It lists plenty of other Toyotas of this era just not the prius. The item no is 253710906315

Perhaps they don't make one for your car. I've seen a few youtube videos where the person opened up the radio
and solderd wired onto the circuit board for the cd player and jumped something with a switch so the radio would think
there was a cd in the player and they played the iPhone through it.
In the long run it might easier to spend $100 and get a newer radio that comes with a USB port and Bluetooth.

Just an update: in the end I gave up! I am sure someone could have got it to work well. I did get it to play if I was playing a cd at the same time. The aux in overpowered the cd volume and you could use a blank cd. Problem is that it affected the cd volume even if that was the only thing being used and I do still use it.
I ended up buying a different Bluetooth fm transmitter. I am actually pretty impressed with it. It is one that plugs directly into the cigarette lighter so it is easy to fire up as soon as you get in the car. It has USB and a micro sd slot too.
