Good point, I’m waiting for the 3 I put a deposit down on two years ago, but it’s not available, Tesla want’s me to spend 50,000$ + for a 3, switch and bait.

Tesla, led by the guy that owned PayPal back in the day, the day that PayPal froze the bank accounts of over two million people that started a class a action suit that was dismissed when PayPal was bought by eBay, sleazy once sleazy always.

Cant wait to buy a seat on a rocket to heaven from this guy.

Oh horse hockey. Feel free to wait for the base model. Should be available within about 6 months.
However, if I truly believed fraud was going on, I certainly wouldn’t be buying that companies product.

Does anybody remember the Dodge Neon starting at under $10k IIRC that lots of people wanted to buy, only to find out Dodge was only making a handful of them? What about stupid low monthly lease payments advertised on TV that only apply to that stripper model that isn't in stock?

Call it "low balling" or "bait and switch" or "loss leader", it's not fraud, it's just normal marketing practice for many products.

Right, bait and switch happens regularly in the automotive industry, and let’s remember, the BBB doesn’t touch the automotive industry, it’s to corrupt, and I’m pointing out a corrupt points leader, unobtanium, being baited and switched....

The BBB did work in my case, when I went after a VW dealer.

Except Tesla always said the base trim would be available after starting production on the higher trims, and reservations for those had been cleared out. Producing the high option models first is general practice in the car industry. It is just obscured by the dealer networks between the manufacturer and the public.

Nothing they are doing is bait and switch, or "a sales tactic in which a customer is attracted by the advertisement of a low-priced item but is then encouraged to buy a higher-priced one", Bait And Switch | Definition of Bait And Switch by Merriam-Webster. The Model 3 site, Model 3 | Tesla, states the wait for the standard battery is a 6 to 9 months wait before you even click the reserve button. There is no pressure from Tesla to have someone upgrade to the higher priced trim. The only pressure is people's impatience at having to wait.

You were told that the base trim would be produced later, and always had the option to get your entire reservation fee refunded to you. You are free to walk away, and get back in line once they start producing the short range model. If you truly feel Tesla is acting fraudulently, then file a complaint with the DA, or even get your own lawyer.

Did anyone truly think one would be waiting 2 years for a Model 3 base model. They may have been told it would come later, but 2 years is a bit much.

Please don’t insult Elon Musk. He is a god send to the advancement of human kind. Did you not just hear about his offer to use his Boring Company to save the Thai children?
I would say that’s quite fascinating and kind on his part.

Elon Musk has no interest in pulling a bait and switch on you. The Model 3 is in high demand and making a car of that high quality caliber takes time. I would rather wait 10 years for the Model 3 then wait 2 for a POS Toyota Prius.

Trust me, do your waiting, it’ll be well worth it. You’ll be saving the environment and driving around in the most stylish car available.

It’s not. Not for a car this ingenious. A car like this has never been done before. This is the future. You clearly don’t seem to understand this. Too blinded by your Prius.

Ya, I figured with previous failure to meet timelines on ensuing ramp-ups, 2019 was not outside of the realm of possibility.

I believe everyone had been given the guidance of 20!9 for the start of production.
Later, when Tesla got way more reservations than planned, the schedule was speeded up to a start of 2017.

I don't recall Musk explicitly detailing the time a $35k model would be released.

Here's a link to a "rough" transcript from the April 1, 2016 reveal:

Rough Transcript of Tesla Model 3 Launch | BYP Group

So when are deliveries? They’re next year. So I do feel fairly confident it will be next year. [Nervous laughter from Musk and the crowd 11:37] Ha ha.

And then in terms of price, it will be $35,000. And I want to emphasise that even if you buy no options at all, this will still be an amazing car. You will not be able to buy a better car at $35,000 or even close even if you get no options. So it’s a really good car even nwith no options.

So Musk didn't say the $35k model would be there from the start. Lots of folks got excited, assumed the 35k version would be available soon after launch time, knew if they could get the $7.5k fed tax credit that this would be a steal. Message boards full of optimists at the time IIRC.

If anyone has any other links around this time on guidance of the $35k model, please post.

Nice link, right, a quote from the first sales pitch.....Two going on three years later, Tesla want’s me to pony up another 2,500$ for a 35,000$ Model 3......That isn’t available....maybe next year?

Yes, I thought I would be waiting two years for the configuration I wanted. I am willing to wait even longer, the tax credit is of no consequence to me to get the car I want. Since no one else is going to make the car I want, then it is going to be a Tesla. All good things come to those who are patient.

That's great, but the next problem Tesla will be facing as the years go by and folks are still waiting for a car they can afford, is that the competion is getting closer to releasing their own cars. Tesla won't be the only game in town for long.
