Glad you got it all worked out!

The aftermarket mic is SO much more responsive. People told me they could hear me much better and more clearly after I had my Pioneer deck and mic installed.

I honestly don't even remember the things/stats you needed the OEM head unit to display. IIRC though they were things that you can still check, but appear a bit different (and smaller) on the HUD. Do you remember what they were by chance?

I'm a bit confused by this....did your USB not work before? Or does it do something different now?

The new head unit installation wound up being done in two parts. The initial installation did not involve the steering wheel controls and the USB adapter from autoharnesshouse.com, so there was a USB extension cable hanging from the bottom of the dash to attach the iPhone to and the OEM USB port was disconnected. After the steering wheel controls were installed and USB adapter was used, the OEM USB port was active again.

The only outstanding issue I have is that the Sony radio tuner is not picking up any stations! My installer is not the best communicator, and does not seem to understand this from my emails, so I will try to get this straightened out. What he did at the second installation appointment was to confirm that the autoharnesshouse AM/FM antenna adapter was the same as what he used during the initial installation, but if he had tested the radio, he would have had to have seen and heard only static! Of course this is not an issue when using CarPlay, but I am sure there will be some situation when I want to rely on conventional radio, i.e., forgetting my phone, or having a failed lightning cable. Anyway, I am learning more than I ever wanted to know about this process.

So now that you have had the new head unit for a while, can you give a list of pros/cons? I'm seriously considering doing this in my '18 Two Eco. I do use the past trip screen a lot under the car menu, but it is duplicated from the small screen menus too so I don't think I'll miss it too much if gone. Most of the car menu options in the head unit are just lights\locs that can be changed with carista if needed, but the defaults works for me. Did you keep your current head unit or did you sell it to recoup costs?

I don't regret my decision at all. Just getting away from Toyota's head unit and their crap software was worth it alone. This Pioneer is way easy to navigate and I don't miss the couple of things you can do on the OEM unit.

I kept mine just in case I ever sell the car, but I probably won't. I didn't know there was a market for the OEM units...is there?

I don't think there is necessarily is a market for OEM units other than to get a replacement. I am thinking of doing the same one as LSeanS and having Best Buy do the installation: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sony-6-4-android-auto-apple-carplay-in-dash-receiver-black/5664822.p?skuId=5664822

I assume there will likely be another $100 or so in extra parts etc.

I would NEVER use Best Buy, EVER. Garbage company with garbage service....I know first hand, and they are headquartered here in MN. Terrible company all the way around.

I got my original head unit from a BB sale, (the last time I've given them any money, and never again...for anything) but they wouldn't install the microbypass for me because of legal reasons. So after BB screwed the basic install (they had a week-1 newbie do it at the end of the day and it was a complete MESS) I hired a local guy to fix BB's garbage install and add the microbypass.

I do recommend the microbypass. Not so you can watch movies while you drive, but so your passenger can navigate all features while you drive without having to stop and put the damn car in park with the E-brake on. It adds $15 to the install and it is worth every penny.

Yeah, I just talked to an audio friend of mine and he told me the same thing, he recommended a local shop to me and that it's worth the small difference in price.

So you do lose some functionality (light and locks menu, trip info, and energy monitor, etc.) but gain the functionality you mentioned above as well as whatever the head unit featured. I'm playing around with getting this little beaut:
    https://www.crutchfield.com/p_500ILXF309/Alpine-Halo9-iLX-F309.html?tp=78184&awkw=408225223667&awat=pla&awnw=g&awcr=248794266672&awdv=c&awug=9029578

Some days I wish I had bought the Prime Premium or the Touring for the 11" head unit.

Hi all! I wanted to share my experience upgrading my 2016 Prius 4's OEM Navigation to the Pioneer AVH-W4400NEX with wireless CarPlay/Android Auto. Overall, it wasn't too bad of a process, but I did learn some lessons. This is what I bought: (sorry, had to remove links)
    • Pioneer AVH-W4400NEX - Again, really like that it supports wireless CarPlay, and, until Waze comes to CarPlay, their AppRadio system allows Waze to be mirrored.
      • I opted for the basic connections package because the advanced package didn't support the existing backup cam. I did pay extra for them to connect their vehicle-specific harness to the radio harness
    • iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR - This allows steering wheel control and backup camera integration
    • iDatalink HRN-RR-TO2 - Connections necessary to connect to the car's systems.
      • My main regret is not seeing if I could get Crutchfield to connect this harness to the radio's. The connections I paid for with the radio ended up being pointless--this iDatalink harness replaces the harness that Crutchfiled sends. Making these connections was the most frustrating part of the install for me (no electrical skills).
    • AXXESS AX-TOYUSB - Adapter to be able to use the USB port in the center console
    • TRS to Dual RCAF - Needed to keep the center console aux input
    • Tresalto Auto Trim Removal Tool Kit
    • MicroBypass ALL AVH-X - Removes screen-use restrictions
    • Male to Female HDMI Extension Cable
Overall, I'm really happy with this radio and the install wasn't too painful. This video (search for "2016-2018 Toyota Prius Beat-Sonic IF-02EP iPhone Mirroring Adapter (Installation)") was a helpful primer to removing the dash trim. That first clip? Yeah, I think I broke that and lost it in my dash...

The radio with Maestro works well. The gauges feature in the radio doesn't work, but the radio does keep many of the vehicle customization features (windows, locks, etc.). Backup camera works perfectly.

I was surprised that the radio info actually shows up better on the center screen with this radio than OEM.
    Before:

    After:

The HUD still works (just no turn-by-turn/speed limits) and the only thing I see that I'm missing on the center screen is the nav screens. I think that some of the settings that used to only be on the radio actually now show up in the center screen. Aren't these new?

Let me know if you have any questions.

Great write up! I've got the SPHDA-120 and I've been looking for an excuse to go wireless CarPlay....well, with Google Maps coming to iOS 12, that'll be when I jump. As long as Siri still works within Google Maps on CarPlay, I'll be getting one.

I'm wondering if all my harnesses and connections will work for the new head unit though?

Wait... You're able to access the factory options with the Pioneer?

This is the exact unit I was just looking at. What kit do I need to get from Crutchfield? They have two packages to connect everything. One is free and one is $183.

Someone with the AVH-W4400NEX installed in a 2016 and newer Prius have a photo of the center console after installation? Does that unit sit flush or how much does it protrude?

It's not the AVH-W4400NEX, but a model for non-US markets that has the same footprint, I used the TOYK932GB dash kit:

Thanks, that looks pretty good. I stopped at a local shop that carries this model and was able to play with it for a bit. I think it what I'm going to install in my car.

Sorry! Just saw this. I got the free kit from Crutchfield, but paired it with the Maestro to keep steering wheel functions and car-specific controls. You could go with the more expensive one from Crutchfield and maintain steering wheel controls that way, but you wouldn't have car specific controls or be able to keep the backup camera.

yes! there are also now more settings available in the factory center dash-mounted screens. paired with Maestro, this is what some of these car-specific screens looks like on the Pioneer:

These are the gauge screens. Alas, they don't work, even when the gas engine is running. Not sure if maybe I have a loose cord somewhere, but haven't cared enough to troubleshoot.

This is what the various car settings look like:
The car settings are available at the bottom of the radio settings:
There are the various screens related to car-specific settings:

These all seem to work ok and are more than was available on the factory unit.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Yes, this model does look very similar! This is the Pioneer AVH-W4400NEX installed using Crutchfield's (free) basic connections package (which includes the AI TOYK932GB Toyota Kit Prius 2016-up, I/DD, Gloss Black dash kit) in a 2016 Prius 4:
