Do I have something to worry if I change my transmission oil now at 50k miles since it hasn’t been changed ever? As many of you know it’s common knowledge that changing the trans oil at higher mileage when it has never been done can cause problems in normal automatic transmissions.
Nope, change away. I waited to change our 2010 Prius II’s until 140 k miles, and wished I would have done it sooner. As you know, this is not a normal transmission, so no issues. Good luck with your fluid drain and fill.
I changed for the first time at 170k miles.....I'm at 171k miles now and I'll let you know if it fails
No odors, just some air gets released. Not sure where the air comes from. Black is about the only color.......
Ours at 140 was black. Ran fine for the next 33 k miles until I drained and filled again. That was purple upon exit . Next change will be around 220 k miles and hopefully in the same condition .
This has occurred before on a different high mileage change. Air comes out when you open the drain plug
I don’t remember that, other than depending on how you drain (leave the fill plug in or not). I drop the fill plug first then drain away. Don’t forget to crack the fill bolt first just in case it doesn’t want to release.
Another suggestion was to change early. Did the RX450h At 6800 miles and it was purple. They have a magnetic drain plug on the front differential and it had some fillings in it. But got it out of the way and ready for 60 k miles change.
The Prius transmission is more like a gearbox than an automatic transmission. The fluid is just there for lubrication and cooling more like a standard transmission.
Just my 2 cents: change it at one year mark or 10K miles, whichever comes last. Then stretch them out, say addlitional 30K, 60K, and so on.
I've done 3 changes: 15K (kms) <by far the darkest drained fluid 40K <marginally darker 65K <very clean, don't think I'll be doing any more, for a long time
