Best place to buy MFD?

Is it just the MFD this is dim, or are all dash lights dim? Do you drive with headlights on during the day? If so, turn them off and see if the brightness improves. All that being said, I bought my used 2004 in Miami and the screen was burnt and the top coating (not the digitizer-the touchscreen that is in front of the screen) was partially melted and brown. I got a replacement for $35 from Pull-A-Part, (I removed it from the junked car myself), but they are not everywhere. Search for “Self-Service” used auto parts or junkyards in your area. Even a regular junkyard may have them for more reasonable prices. Another outfit is LKQPickYourPart.com (I see two LKQ in your area, they have vehicle inventory online, but no guarantee any particular part is still there.) lots of others in your area, grab a screwdriver and 10mm ratchet and go shopping out in the heat! Prices vary, sometimes it may even vary with a different cashier at the same location, since they don’t really know what the MFD is.

Why not contact Texas Hybrids? They will sell you an updated one (won't tap out at 199,999) and can be set to your mileage. The swap should take about an hour.

 

The U Pull & Pay has a 2009, no guarantee on the MFD--you might try calling a couple of the full-service junkyards, especially if they specialize in foreign cars.
@peecee I don't think @Texas Hybrid Batteries does MFDs, just Combo meters (they may chime in), AutoBeYours.com does MFD repair and would probably sell one if they had it (but I think they also sell them on eBay.)

 

@ITBland you may be right about @Texas Hybrid Batteries. I just know there are differences. I have a newer MFD that will not work with my 2004. Hey - I'd be happy to send that along if it works for @Artric. I pulled it from a 2008. No guarantees, but it gets out of my garage and into someone who might possibly use it.

 

@peecee , Did you find a replacement for your 2004? You can use the 2008 in a 2004 (I'm doing it), you just need to move a few wires in the plug.

Follow that thread with @ITBland color chart. I replaced a standard MFD with the high res mfd a few hours ago. Works great!

Be aware, the small little wires on that connector are a pain!

 

Luckily, only one small wire needs to be moved, the others are the larger power and ground wires, and those can be freed with a small screwdriver. (I also could not free the Speed wire, ended up cutting it and splicing it to a newly inserted wire in the correct location.)

 

The plugs don't even match (at least from what I remember). So I haven't tried to make it work. When I get home tomorrow I'll look again at the newer MFD to see exactly what part number/model it is. Thanks for the link to the how to and excellent write up. I should be able to move pins around no problem!

 

If you have navigation, then the change is complicated (I have an excellent 2004 Navigation MFD I don't need--we could swap if that's what you need), but if you have a base 2004, here is the most complete list of pin swaps: Will 86110-47230 work instead of 86110-47081 in 2005 Base Model?, and here is how to release the pins: Will 86110-47230 work instead of 86110-47081 in 2005 Base Model?. All of the wires EXCEPT the speed wire are relatively easy to release and move, I gave up on trying to release the tiny speed wire, added a new pin and spliced the wire. (Reportedly you can take a pin from an old computer cd audio cable and place it in the correct spot). Wires connection of back-up camera to MFD !!!. I am using a 86110-47230 in my base 2004 and have added a backup camera (@DangNabbit is working on his base 2008, adding a backup camera). Wires connection of back-up camera to MFD !!!

 

@peecee , I looked at your new owner thread (WOW!), and you and I are in the same boat! I also got a terrible 2004 as a project and replaced the entire interior from the Pick-N-Pull and have been replacing other pieces here and there . I got lucky and found a nice 2004 premium and got a lot of parts out of it (sadly, it got carted away before I stripped it completely ). BUT, I did get the MFD out of it and it is excellent! I was using it in my base 2004 (it will just plug right in) until I got the 86110-47230 and re-wired the plug. It is not capable of having a rear camera without an expensive adapter from Coastal added, but it will show your navigation (way out of date navigation) and all of the other functions (except the radio you replaced).
Edit: Looks like Coastal does not make them anymore, (maybe available used?)

 

@Artric, Even if this 2009 Prius still has its MFD, it is a Nav model (I know in 2004/2005, the nav MFD is plug-in compatible with the base model, I don't know if the 2006-09 is the same, but I bet it is, you just won't have any nav function.)

 

On my prius any of mfd's works. As well, I have exchange with warranty.
