Hello. I'm a 3 day old Prius Prime driver and had a question about the hybrid battery/gas consumption on this vehicle. Every morning, my Prime is fully charged. When I drive to work, it's goes through the hybrid battery first and then gas once the battery is depleted. This is the same routine for the past 3 days. Is this how it's supposed to be? I thought having a hybrid battery, I'm able to use both gas/battery to extend my drive? Would someone with more experience please respond?
When you start the car it sets itself to EV (Electric Vehicle) mode. You’ll want to set it HV mode using to mode button to have it operate the way you want. You need to do this after every startup. I wonder if Choosing EV Auto mode would be better? J
welcome! you have 3 options as schja01 mentions above. it defaults to ev on start up, so experiment with the other 2 to see what you like. also, read the manual, there is a lot of vital info in there. all the best!
When you start driving, the car is set to EV (electric only) by default. Once the charge for this part of the traction battery is depleted, the car switches to hybrid mode; using the internal combustion engine (ICE) as well as electric. If you pay careful attention, you will notice the ICE cycles off when coasting or when you come to a stop. You can manually switch modes as well. Some use EV for the city portion of their drive and switch to HV for highway driving.
When you deplete your total electric drive(EV)...the car goes automatically to Hybrid mode(HV)...which uses gas and electric ...hence you can drive until you run out of gas...sort of a regular prius at that point...Try, when you first start out, just run in EV for a few miles , then push the second button under the display to HV and run in hybrid(HV) mode for a while, which ,in essence will save your EV miles for later use...
Thanks. It's Day 4 for me. I tried toggling between Eco EV and Eco HV on my 33miles to work today. I used EV on local streets and HV on the freeway. When I got to work, my Prime driving report gave me an 85/100. I was using cruise control with the sensor set to 3 bars ahead of the car in front of me when I was on the freeway. Any tips on how to drive more efficiently?
If your driving on HWY does not involve >75mph drive, you should be able to get entire 33 miles to work or close to it on EV only. Can you charge at work? If not, saving EV on your return home for in town drive like you have described would probably give you better range and mpg. I commute 18 miles one way, and I have no charging facility at work. I always run out of EV charge a few miles before getting home. That elusive few miles. Guuur
85 is a good score, getting 100 is practically impossible...highest i;ve ever got was 98...i have noticed that keeping cruise control off and front sensor off and driving manually increases my score...however, freeway/interstate driving tends to reduce the acceleration score, but the cruising score is usually good...braking score...is usually lower, in that environment...most drivers wont let you get a good score into the 90s because they force us to drive like stupids ...i get the best scores driving in the country by myself and i set my speeds ,not the morons around me...but realistically you are doing good...
