So, fresh off the new brake actuator pump and new hybrid battery and a nice four hour drive yesterday and today i went over a small bump and started to get a loud clunk/rattle coming from the driver's side front wheel area.

It got worse as I drove home and even rattles going straight on a fairly flat road when i hit only minor imperfections. It sounds like something is loose. I cannot reproduce any noise bouncing the car or rocking it side to side.

Prior to this I would get a squeak/groan from the driver's side when I would go over speed bumps and similar large dips or rises, but that has been curiously quiet for awhile.

The sound reminds me of when the strut mounts were loose and then failed on my parents Toyota Avalon.

I looked at the offending strut top where it bolts to the frame and it does not appear loose. Am I likely looking at a bad strut top assembly? Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks in advance!

This is all I can see, clearly the boot is torn (as it is on the passenger side (not pictured)). WP_20150908_009.jpg WP_20150908_010.jpg WP_20150908_011.jpg WP_20150908_013.jpg WP_20150908_014.jpg

Btw, car drives smooth other than rattle, and had steering recall part replaced about two months ago, steering seems fine, car handles true.

Based on mileage, I guess I'm just going to order new strut/shocks, assembly mounts, washers, boots, etc., and see how that goes, but still any thoughts appreciated.

The vertical links between the struts and the anti roll bar (sway bar in the US) are a common reason for this sort of noise. They are very difficult to check in place, but are cheap and easy to replace particularly if you use aftermarket parts. If you can move any of the four ball joints by hand once the links are removed the link is worn.

Thanks. I will try to take a look at this before ordering other parts.

Good news, I jacked up the car to have a look at the links and noticed there was play in the sway bar itself, so I stuck my hand in to feel around and this came out in my hand... guess I'll start with new bushings and go from there! WP_20150908_018.jpg

Happy you have found the very likely problem. Sometime we convince ourselves problems are more complicated than they are.

Yep, I developed that habit owning Saabs. Sometimes running out of gas is not a direct ignition cassette failure, etc.. Part is $13 at the dealer plus 20% coupon, so for about $21 I should be good as new on both sides. Thanks again, I was getting ready to just order the struts before you encouraged me to actually look further under the car. I'll put off the struts for now, car felt good yesterday driving curvy mountain roads...

Replacing the bushing solved the noise. Two 12mm bolts. Not too bad; for anyone reading the post, you need to make sure to scrape the rust off the sway bar, beneath the old bushing, so the new bushing will fit properly.

    2009 Prius Base modelt:

I had a rattling sound like I was dragging chains around or metal to metal clanking sound when I am riding over uneven or bumpy roads. My SWAY BAR LINKS were bad, rubber boots were cracked and grease was coming out of one of them. I replaced them both and noise is gone and steering is slightly better also.

@arronlife: what he did you must also check, get underneath your car and you can see the boots make sure there are still rubber there, if yours is crack or dry rotted to the point where you can just pick at it, REPLACE IT.

Lastly: I also have a hissing sound, similar to Turbo releasing pressure, when I go over bumps - its summer and hot - so the noise is somewhat noticeable when windows are down and roads quiet. This is due to my shocks because its specific and only occurs when I go over a hump or dipping in to pot holes. Check site to see how to test shocks - my 09 Prius has about 103k so its close to replacement time.

I put a quick video of what was replaced on youtube Hdppd -
    hopefully this helps...
