Oil Catch Can, Eliminate that knock!

    the 5k is due to the oil consumption. the motor on my Ct200h is going through 1qt per 1000 miles (which apparently, is considered as "normal" by the local Lexus dealership). I did 10k oil changes, per the manual and never questioned it until one day I noticed, the oil coming out was much lower than prev oil changes. I cant imagine a way, to file a claim against Mobil, but if one is made, I'd love to be apart of it

    One last thing I'd do, if i had a time machine, is to replace the intake manifold that was mentioned in the tsb. In the case of Ct200h owners, we're on our own here, as the tsb does not cover a Lexus (even though, its the same darn 3rd gen motor)

    There was a lot of activity on many threads about a year ago. Some of us have mitigated the usage a bit. However, most of us are in the 'acceptance' stage now and have learned to live with it. :D

    If the head gasket failure was attributable to the oil, then I’m afraid it may be too late to submit a claim at this point, but regarding oil loss if Lexus claims that as normal then nothing to claim there either. (I just looked at our ‘12 Prius v manual and it notes Max 1.1 qt. / 600 mi so your loss is probably considered normal like you were told)....

    Im doing the usual 10k and max 1year with mobil1 0-20W and original toyota filter and I started having oil burning at around 50-60k miles. Now at 80k+ Im burning around 1qt per 2k miles and installing oil catch can new PCV and all the cleaning did not helped just make the engine start much smooth while cold.

    The intake and EGR cleaning and catch can are preventative maintenance. To fix the oil burning now probably requires cleaning the piston's oil control rings. Look up "piston soak" and fuel system cleaners.

    I know but Im still waiting if the class action going to start anytime soon if not and the oil burning get worse I have no choice then do piston cleaning or replacing then for a upgraded version.
    Thankfully I have a friend who might help me with that but its too much work and I need the car for work every day.

    Here's something than could be added to the equation regarding oil burning but it's difficult to quantify and probably an unpopular opinion (of mine). How hard do you drive? Seriously? Do you have to keep up with everyone mashing the gas? and drive 85 mph? This little engine is only 134 HP pulling 3100 lbs. If you're keeping up with the SUV Soccer Mom in the left lane each time the traffic light turns green, then you are driving it really hard. Yeah, I know, it should be able to handle it because your old Honda Civic, Hyundai whatever, or Packard never burned a drop and you drove the hell out of it. I'm saying a Prius is built for economy, not stop light drags and not 85 mph. It will burn oil, after awhile, when driven hard. By the way, that's just my opinion.

    I think sustained high speed driving in particular can exacerbate oil consumption? Not laid-back highway driving, sticking to the limits.

    With the best habits you can start using oil, but I think the above can make it worse.

    You mention things I have also mentioned in the past. We have been on three long (around 5K mile) road trips in our 2010....lots of elevation changes on all of the trips. I think the consideration is not how fast you are going but how hard the engine is working.

    For instance, I have observed more burnage going up mountain passes and such. This is worst case for the Prius as the engine roars like thunder all the way up. In fact, I take along a jug of Mobil 1 on a trip 'just in case' the oil level drops too much.

    I have also observed slightly more burnage when my daughter drives...as she is a much more aggressive driver that I am in terms of mashing the accelerator and such.

    Just resign yourself to staying with such oils, once you start. They work by swelling rubber parts, in particular valve seals. While this may be effective for some oil consumption, if you return to regular oil, the rubber seals that were swelled may shrink back, worse than before.

    So whats the better option Annual protection combine with maybe 0-40W to slow the consumption?
    As for driving I do like 70% city 30% highway max like 70mph and I dont drive like grampa.
    Oil change for me is 1 year and it depends something between 8-10k miles.

    I wonder if the prius burns more oil in eco/regular (atkinson cycle) vs power mode (otto). There would be more compression in power mode, creating a better seal for piston rings. Thus burning less oil. Unless your valve seals are bad.

    Hmm so the engine *does* switch to otto mode in power mode? If so, that's news to me. All the discussion I've ever read is that the 'mode' buttons only affect throttle response....and A/C tweaks in ECO mode. In fact, I have researched this a bit and never found any conclusive proof. Could you point me to technical articles on the subject?

    I guess i got this confused with the way the atkinson cycle works on the tacoma, how it can cycle from otto to atkinson cycle. I always thought the prius did the same due to having vvti on the intake side.

    Well, I would try the High Mileage version alone and see what happens. If the consumption stops then perfect, we’re all set.

    I switched to Mobil 1 Annual Protection when it first barely came out, was it last year or two years ago, and the original price: $49.xx for 5 quarts at Walmart. Now it’s hovering around $39.xx last time I checked, and I’m not looking back.

    If the Prius v or Scion iQ that I have using it starts consuming oil, I will send a message to Mobil about it, and possibly switch to the High Mileage Extended Performance version. I wouldn’t look back on that choice either.


    I’m definitely going to try to monitor oil levels more frequently though!

    Checked the catch can I put on my wife’s 2015 two today for the first time since I put it on. Car has 38k miles and the catch can has been on there for 300 miles. There was appx a tablespoon of oil in the catch can. Looked like regular oil and was not milky or discolored.

    Not much oil but at least it didn’t end up in the intake or egr.

    300 miles is not much.

    Put one in the 2017 too?

    Off-topic, but I'm kinda stoked about it: gearing up to put an OCC in a Mazda CX-5, hopefully this weekend; should be interesting. It has direct injection so doubly important, the intake valves don't get washed by gas.
