I’m looking for some advice on adding a hitch to our 2010 Prius. We want to figure out a way to gain some extra storage space for camping. I want to do something like the attached photo. Is this safe and can it be installed without any extensive modifications? Also, what is a maximum weight limit I should keep in mind?

I have a Curt hitch on the back, had it installed for an extra $ 75.00. Very happy with it so far, on a 2010 Prius. Here are the particulars.

Yes, curt hitch. Installed pretty easy. I used for bike racks.

I put this on to move some stuff between GA and TN. Towed a 6x10 trailer with quite a bit of stuff on it no problem. Mileage did suck, but acceleration and braking were no problem at all. I take my boat back and forth to the lake all the time as well. When I say mileage sucked I mean high 30's. I wouldn't make a regular practice of towing anything that dropped the mileage that significantly on a regular basis. I think that was pushing it. Hope this info helps someone.

One more thing. Installed it myself after watching a video on youtube. Took about 20 minutes and was no big deal.

One thought about the OP's picture: it'd be good to put some bright red reflectors on the back edge of that.
