This is/was the best thread ever! My 2011 Gen III has 185,000+ miles of 65 to 70 mph highway miles and does not burn oil. I've always changed oil every 5000 mi with Mobil 1. My hat is off to the OP for thinking it out and NutzaboutBolts for these great videos. With everyone's helpful posts, I was able to replace the spark plugs, clean the EGR pipe, clean the EGR Cooler and install the Oil Catch Can (OCC). This was a two day (8 hours per day) effort on my part. Between dropping things, using colorful language and watching my garage TV, I did get it done. My small hint that helped me is to have the front end lifted by about 8 inches (race ramps) or so, as it really helps your back when leaning over it and I'm only 5' 11". Removing the aero panel underneath made it all a little more bearable when dropping stuff. Yeah, it always looks easy in the videos. However, I got her done! THANK YOU ALL!

I like garage radio. We are blessed with CBC radio up here though, commercial free, mostly discussion, current events, this-n-that. Even that I'm reluctant to turn on, if I'm doing something requiring brain cells, I need them all focused.

I’m a garage radio listener and nothing beats the 80s or 90s alternative to get the work flowing(y).

This is exactly what I was looking for. A prius owner with high mileage doing 5k oci. You proved my point. 10k oci (oil change intervals) hurt our engines and cause excessive engine wear. I believe this should be a sticky. The dealer only cares about car lasting till warranty is up and 10k oci is a selling point. If your engines burns oil, blows a head gasket, breaks after warranty, what do they care. I believe motor oil starts get diluted from fuel and water. I also believe more of this oil break up from dilution cause more oil to pass through the pcv. Thanks Stanger. This information is invaluable here on prius chat. I have always known oil is cheaper than engine's. Thank you for posting.

Who uses an actual radio now a days? Everyone has a smart phone with apps to tune in to radio stations on them... you can listen to any radio stations lol... not commercial free of course but still worth it than hearing statices occasionally :(

Me. But I'm fine with current events, politics, human interest, and CBC radio delivers that, commercial free. You know, old folk fare, lol. The typical local music station, you're inundated with ads.

    You can stream it...

You don’t use the Bluetooth that came with the car? I just sync it with my phone for the Prius, unless it’s a non nav system I assume?

Thanks, danlatu. I might add these 5000 mi oil change intervals (oci) all used Mobil 1 Synthetic oil (0-20W) and a Toyota factory oil filter. No oil burning and only catching drops of oil in my OCC each week. No water or milky stuff. 80% of my driving is on the highway at 65 to 70 mph in the high desert of Southern California. I drive conservatively and not aggressive. High winds, extreme heat (and sometimes cold down to 25 deg F.) and very low humidity are the normal weather conditions. In the morning, there's not much wind on my daily drive to Edwards AFB. By the afternoon, I'm driving into a consistent headwind/crosswind of 20+ mph. That wind wreaks havoc on MPG but I still consistently get 51 to 55 MPG with manual computation.

My set up is similar to his because my ears deserve Bluetooth 4.1 protocol standard.

I change my oil every 10k miles and I’m not burning oil either the last time I checked. I’ll recheck on my next oil change to confirm and also to check the OCC how much fluids in there (y)

If I had a time machine, Id tell my 2012 self:

    -install an oil catch can
    -do 5k oci

resolution to my "engine shakes" and "misfire" issues = leak in the HG. thankfully, the heads were not warped and wasnt too much effort replacing the head gaskets. car drives again. its been quite a roller coaster ride ... I'm glad its all over and I can resume a normal life again

Thanks for the update! Are the 5k oil change and OCC your friend’s recommendations? How long were you waiting to change your oil, the 1 yr/10k miles? Is it an oil failure? And if so I wish a claim may have been made to Mobil?

My 2011 package 2 does not have navigation or bluetooth, our 2010 is a package 3 comes with bluetooth phone but no audio on music and no navigation.
I needed audio to get pushed through the speakers for navigation and music. The bluetooth adapter has a mic for speaker phone but hate using it. I do not like talking/texting/eating while driving. I drive with the flow of traffic and pay attention most of the time. The 3rd gen prii interior noise is a little annoying. I'm considering buying a slightly used 2017 prius 2 eco. Interior noise levels are more manageable but feels slower:( I like the fact i will get to mirror my phone's nav into the stock screen with an adapter:)

I flew into Edwards on a hop from Dover and froze my butt off. Co-pilot let me fly the refueling boom. Not me in the pic, just for reference.
