We just bought a '15 Prius II. Like it lots. However, the standard (non-JBL) sound system seems lacking--we listen to classical music. The bass disappears when on the road (competition: tire and engine and wind noises). The volume automatic adjustment for speed seems ineffective. When in range, radio station classical music sounds better than CDs (which are perfect in the house). We'll not redo the audio system. But we'd consider a "fix," if some have experience and success with say, alternative speakers (bass in door, ...is that mid-and-treble at dash corners by windshield?). Or insight in fine tuning the audio controls. Not going to rip into the audio unit. At the moment the adjustments: I've got the speakers in front a bit more preferred than all of them going. The driver side a small bit preferred. Bass up a bit (I can hear it better than can wife), treble up more than a bit (I hear it less than does wife). Automatic compensation for traveling: High. I greased (fancy Honda lithium grease...made in Japan) the rubber gaskets on windows/doors hoping this would help seal out road noise. New here. Responses welcome.
I was hoping the same; had kind of a placebo effect for a few days & then everything was back to normal/
congrats and welcome! prius is not a quiet car. your options are: 1) quieter tires 2) dynomat 3) better head unit and speakers 4) each will improve interior sound, and cumulatively, a huge improvement. 5) all the best!
Do a mod I coined "Megladon antenna mod" to keep retain distant FM radio stations. I currently run 16-bit audio low line level through a graphic equalizer then to the audio system. The before and after comparisons is day from night. Almost as if component system was added.
I have a gen3 2014 with non jbl as well. I installed this power pack and some Alpine component speakers. I also did sound deading in doors that helps alot. Then I put a class D 500 rms amp in rear try with two Rockford fosgate p10 in a sealed box. You could probably skip the sub if you primarily listen to classical Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Soooooo. I bought JBL speakers 6520. 2 way 6 1/2" speakers. Also with "Boom Mat" foam backers. The idea is that the head unit is minimal and help is urgently sought. For our Prius, we installed these speakers/backers and we're utterly pleased. Took a couple of hours...no more. Original speakers look like throw away trash--no wonder there's no quality sound emanating from them. Thankfully the new setup allows for comparison. The new speakers are 3 ohms to help bring minimal input a long way forward. The foam backup is to disallow sound escape out the back. So far: super pleased for modest investment to reverse Toyota's audio ignorance. Huge input from Crutchfield who drove the conversation. I parted with under $90 and am dancing on the Prius roof to music from these modest yet high performance speakers. Solid sound from the original head unit, tweeters, rear seat speakers. Only changed out the front door speakers. My music preferences: Classical and Leonard Cohen.
