After market spare tire for Prius Prime?

I’m with you and paid $30 for an “new” (unused) spare from a wrecked Gen 3. I’m still exploring ways to secure it in the back of my Prime, as a loose wheel could become a lethal weapon in a crash. My Mickey Mouse spare spends most of the time in my garage, but I plan to carry it as cheap insurance on longer excursions. As you may have guessed, I don’t trust the Toyota “flat tire repair kit” to get me off a remote highway.

 

Any 4th or 3rd gen temp spare should be exact match. Second gen 2005, the rim is probably compatible too, but the tire size will be a little small, and also: if it's the original tire, 10 years is sort-of the expiry date for tires. I would look up 4th gen temp spare spec (in the Owner's Manual), shop for one of those.

You could also just get a full-size spare, if the bulk is ok with you. As an example, a Corolla steel rim (p/n 42611-02471) and a Bridgestone Ecopia EP20 in 195/65R15 would work.

Note also: if I'm not mistaken, your car does come with a jack.

Just in case you didn't know - there is an inflator and sealant kit in the back of the Prime. So you're not totally left without any solution if left on the side of the road. There is also a jack underneath the rear seat behind the driver, and a toolkit in the charging cable storage area in the hatch.

 

That's true, but if your sidewall gets clipped by a curb in Campville, your trip won't end well in Endwell...

(because the inflator and sealant kit can't fix a sidewall puncture...)

 

I'll look into making such a bag, but I wouldn't even consider selling it fully kitted with a tire and tools. Too much liability for anything less than a large corporation.

 

$65? Wow. I just wrapped my spare donut in plastic, taped it shut with packing tape and rolled it in behind the passenger seat. Free, pretty much. And it looks like it is just some junk in the back rather than something expensive sitting there for thieves if they snoop.

 

I suspect over $40 of that is Mini Cooper, and about $25 is spare tire carrier. It was the first one I found. As someone mentioned, I am just a Google expert.

 

I've found numerous Prius spare tires for sale on the used market. Before I commit to purchasing one can someone who has purchased one please confirm what year(s) Prius donut spares fit the '17 Prius Prime? I prefer not to guess. TIA

 

The size would be found in the PDF owners manual of a Gen VI Prius.

 

Update. According to my local Toyota dealer, any 2010 or newer Prius donut spare will fit the Prius Prime.

 

There you go. And, I'd suspect second gen temp spare rims would be compatible as well, just the rubber a little undersized, lesser outside diameter.

I got an unused doughnut spare from a wrecked Gen 3 Prius for $30. The lug nut pattern is the same as my 2017 Prime. The doughtnut tire has a slightly smaller diameter than the Prime tire, but it works fine. After trying it on for fit and size, my son and daughter decided that they would rather walk than be seen in such a nerdy looking car. ‘At last ......... a little alone time.’

 

Tire Cover off ebay $ 4.99. Cheap but works fine and keeps the interior clean.

I got a generation 3 donut from a junk yard for $25, took out all the useless toyota tools, jack, and wheel changing stuff, put in a real star lug wrench under the front passengers floor matt, and put the donut and a real hydraulic jack behind the passengers seat. Most of my flats/blowouts have been unrepairable with what Toyota supplies. Will fasten the jack and wheel down with a rope soon.

 

Great find, and a good price. If I drive anywhere far, the spare from my wife's CT200h goes with us behind one of the front seats. The only thing I kinda worry about is the lug nuts off the alloy stock wheels really don't seat well enough in the steel spare donut wheel. I really should get a 5 nut set of proper lug nuts to fit the countersink in the spare, just for peace of mind and a more proper tight fit.

 

I'm not quite sure I'm understanding you on this one.

Your Toyota OE Prime lug nuts have a 60 degree conical end that was specifically put there by Toyota to be used on a steel wheel.
