2010 Prius, bought new, now has 146k miles, zero issues. These are hard, rural Vermont miles.

Absolutely the lowest cost of ownership, most reliable car we've ever owned.

Thanks, everyone. We are going to go with a Prius. We will be looking in the 75000 to 100,000k mileage range and a budget that maxes out at about 12k all in. We are hoping to find a Prius four or five in that range. Seems like a few show up but they are rare compared to the two or three.

Tampa hybrid's has good inventory and good prices. I'd definitely check that place out!

Where in the world did you read that the Prius was not recommended?? I have 130k on my 2010 Prius and only have done the brakes, that's it(minus headlight bulbs, but got that issue fixed with a recall). I change the oil every 10kish and haven't touched any other fluids. Just replaced the 12v battery today as it was getting low. This car just turns on and goes, period. No squeaky belts or timing belt to worry about. I've owned dozens of cars and this is by far, the most reliable and solid car I have owned. My cousin has a 2005 prius with over 250k, still going strong. I have a lexus(toyota) with 175k and its a tank, toyota's can't be beat and I think the world of Hondas, but Toyota is #1 for reliability. Definitely buy a prius, just make sure it's a clean, well kept car.

you may want to change the tranny fluid at least as the most wear happens in the first 30-60k and less after that! also your coolant will both be due, and check your egr pipe (and cooler) as that was pretty clogged up on my 2014 with 155k and might eventually cause blown head gasket from overheating if clogged up (nuts and bolt video on those). Mine isn't burning oil but stiff...

    This does not compute.
