The Auxiliary battery failed two weeks ago. Took the car to the dealer and was told I needed a new one. Service advisor informed me that the battery is a "Dealer Item" and I can not get it anywhere else. Left the place $451. lighter.
A couple days later I did some searching online and I see several places that claim the battery they sell will fit the 2016 Prius for half the cost.
I would like to hear from those that have replaced the battery from a "Parts house".
Please provide brand, CCA, cost and any other pertinent information.
For instance, Batteries Plus claims the have two batteries that will fit.

Hi - welcome. There has been some discussion - I can't say I stored it in my memory - but if you do a search for something like "Gen 4 12 Volt battery", you will find some threads.

I'm not sure if CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) is a totally relevant point, as it does no Cold Cranking - all actual cranking is done by the Traction Battery.

But check for previous discussions - and hopefully those involved will chime in with information.

The dealer replaced my faulty battery under warranty - just a standard off-the-shelf 45AH battery.

    See previous discussion: 12 Volt for 16 Prius 2 | Page 2 | PriusChat

The original poster in that thread (@Edward Kennedy) never told us what battery he finally installed. Perhaps I missed it, but I can’t recall a report on PriusChat that a specific, third-party battery sold in the U.S. was successfully installed in a fourth-generation Prius. That’s not to say it wouldn’t work, of course, just that no one has actually done so and reported it here.

Regarding the warranty, see my posting in this thread.

I guess I should mention that the car had 97xxx miles when the battery went out. It was past warranty. I drive for Uber and Lyft. I have put 79630 miles on it since I purchased it used with 18xxx miles on it in February of 2017.

Hummm, more I read about 12v battery for Prius, I am starting to worry about very high replacement cost in future. Is there something special about Gen4 (which I suppose includes Prime) 12 v battery? I've never heard of $450 for 12 v battery replacement.

On March 18, 2020, the 84 month warrantied battery was purchased from Toyota dealer for $176 + tax. Anyone who paid $451 foro a battery alone got ripped off. AutoZone had a 36 month battery for $139, but we wanted a longer warranty. The original 2016 Prius IV battery was a 36 month battery.

I have been trying to find a suitable 12V battery replacement for my 2017 Prius Two. All of the "box store" recommendations mentioned here on Prius Chat come back as "not suitable for your vehicle" or just not available on the store's website. I have 40,000 mi. on the 2017 Prius with a "weak" battery (according to the Prius dealer). I checked the voltage this morning after sitting all night and just backing the car out of the garage. It was 12.36v and according to what I read here any voltage under 12.6v indicates the battery should be replaced. What's amazing to me is of the four Prius' I've owned none have had to have the 12v battery replaced and two of them ran over 120,000 miles with the original 12v battery! What's going on? I really resist paying $280 for a battery at the dealer (and they don't have any anyway). Where can I find a battery that fits this vehicle??? All recommendations accepted! Thanks!

Where did you read this? 12.6v is almost full maybe 90% SoC. If you have to replace the battery at that SoC, almost all the Prius sitting on a dealer's lot would have to get a new battery before sold, and it will have to be replaced every 3 weeks thereafter. The 12.36v resting voltage is on the weaker side, but still plenty of SoC left. All you need is a battery charger/maintainer. As for the degradation of the the 12v battery for Prius Prime which uses the same regular conventional wet led-acid 12v battery as Gen4 Prius, I have been monitoring the 12v battery in my almost new 2020 Prius PRIME purchased in end of Feb this year very closely since the Covid-19 restriction started in March. The car without daily drive (currently only driven about 50miles/week) does drain the 12v Soc and in 3-4 weeks it is down to 12.4v on mine. I routinely recharge when the SoC drops below 12.4v.

As for the replacement battery, any H4 size battery will work. The OEM battery is ~$180 (street price can be lower Part Number: 00544-H4052-470 ), but you can find aftermarket one for about $120, such as this one. Champion Premium Battery, Group Size H4 | 2283504 | Pep Boys

That’s a battery for older Prius models and for the Prius c, but it’s the wrong size for fourth-generation (2016–) Prius cars, for which the original battery has Toyota part number 28800-37130 or 28800-37140. In the U.S., dealers sell a replacement battery under Toyota’s TrueStart brand, part number 00544-H4052-470, listed with its equivalent sizes (H4 and LN1) in the 2020 edition of Toyota’s Battery Application Chart (PDF).
There has been a great deal of confusion, even among sellers, about battery types for fourth-generation Prius cars. I wouldn’t rely on the sellers’ websites for application information. As @Salamander_King points out, almost any size H4, LN1, or 140R battery will do; an AGM battery, needed for older Prius models, is not required.

Thanks for correcting the information. My search must have given me a wrong result. I edited my comment.

Man! This whole thread has been nothing but confusing information for me. To start with, I saw this 12.6 low voltage cutoff point by Googling low voltage for a 12V battery. Yeah, I know, you have to take what you read on Google with a grain of salt, but it seems like that may be true here too. After reading and cringing at all the "steps" to replacing the Gen 4 battery I am probably going to have to find someone to do this for me. I'm in my mid-80s and prefer not to get into the stress of having to deal with the mindboggling sequences I'm reading here needed to prevent problems with the electrical system with the car. One post says it's just like replacing a battery in any car and the exact opposite in a post saying you need a post-doctoral degree to figure out how to do this. All of this coupled with the fact that even if you were willing to rob a bank to buy the dealer battery, no dealer has one anyway! My wife is worried now that she's going to be stranded out in the middle of nowhere but I would be willing to let it go for a while. I'd prefer to buy an 84-month warranty battery as I probably won't be keeping this car that long anyway, but again, where do I find one and who's going to put it in? Frustrating search!!!!

I gave a link for the Pepboy selling the compatible battery for $108. No, it' not OEM and it does not come with 84 months warranty, but honestly it should be just as good as OEM battery that sells at $180 (MSRP) which has ~$140 street price that I also gave you a correct link after editing my comment (although the shipping cost wold make this item to be more expensive than what the website says). It is best to find one locally, that way you car bet the core refund by exchanging the old battery.

And changing the 12v battery on Gen4 Prius is as easy as any other regular car that has a wet led-acid battery. The battery is located under the hood. You do not need to crawl into the trunk of the car. As long as you are careful not to connect it reverse, it should be one of the easiest DIY maintenance item on current PRIUS.

Thank you Salamander_King! I have changed batteries in vehicles for years, but as I said, reading all the steps, etc I saw here on PC, I began to question whether I should do this in fear of screwing up the car in some other way.

From what you have said I assume any compatible 12V battery with the same case size and specs would work. I'm sure knowing the left/right position of the + and - terminals are critical, but maybe all 12V batteries have the same configuration - I've never thought about that before! Thanks again. I will check out Pep Boys to see what I come up with. I appreciate your help.
