I frequently drive several days in a row just in EV. But yesterday and today when my EV miles went to 0, the ICE came on and very soon after the ICE was revving at a high RPM. Not sure if there is any connection but I just had the battery fuse recall done last week. Mike
Typically when I reset the 12v battery after working in ours the next startup will have the engine rev high as the electronics “relearn” their settings. I wouldn’t be too concerned unless it continues to happen and is more than a small period of time. As an aside, I spent last weekend at the Sonoma Raceway, but not “racing” around like we did the last time in a Prius. The SVRA Historic Race Event was a good time. We parked ourselves at the hairpin turn and got to see the lone accident of the day in the Group 1 pre-1941 class: They touched on the last lap at the corner exit. #4 was not happy at all.
Just during warmup one time. Second time I just had 1 block to go before home...so I waited at home for 10 seconds or so...still kept revving so I powered off. I will monitor it more over the next couple days as I have to drive further than my typical 8 mile commute. Mike
I was waiting for an invite, but it never came. They must have gotten enough data from us last year for their autonomous car comparison, or they are still interpreting it. I was looking forward to not having to deal with traffic though and getting back out on the track.
It seems to me like I've had that happen occasionally. I never worried about it. If it's dropped out of EV, then the engine will charge the battery with whatever isn't needed for propulsion or other loads. If I had to guess, I'd guess that the computer has determined that it will pollute less under the present conditions if the catalytic converter warms more quickly. But I have no idea how it makes that decision.
AFAIK, that's the warm-up cycle if you request a decent amount of power from the engine. If you can keep your foot out of it, engine speed stays down, but if you want more power the car will rev the engine more than it normally does to get you that power until it warms up enough. I think most cars do that to minimize wear on a cold start up.
Thanks to all who have commented. Note that this is my 4th Prius (2001, 2004, 2010 and 2012 PIP) So I have lots of experience with what is, I think, "normal." This behavior was outside of what I've seen before. Mike
i suppose something could be wrong, but let's hope not! how many miles on her? do you know lifetime ev %?
A bit over 40K miles total with 2/3rds in EV. The ICE is still like new for 6 year old car. Update: last 2 days the ICE comes on and is normal. Problem gone. Mike
