How to find and purchase a spare tire for a Prius Prime 2017/2018

    Hello,

    I've owned a 2011 II & now own a 2015 II. I bought a 2015 v for my wife.
    I'm considering buying a 2017/ 2018 Prime, but I must have a spare - I want to put a donut spare/ wheel in the trunk - or even better - over the battery as I have read.

    Tire Rack indicates that the Prime takes that same tire size as the II, but the wheels are different.

    Will the donut spare from other Pruis' fit the Prime? Will a Corolla Donut work?

    Thank you bisco. I did search the forum on the subject of compact spares. There is some useful information, such as the Corolla having the same fit.

    However, there doesn't seem to be any feedback specific to the 2017-2018 Prime. According to Tire Rack, the prime takes
    the same tire size as the other Prius'. However, it does have different rims, so I need to know if the available compact spare
    will fit the lug pattern on a current Prime.

    Keep the spare from your Prius when you trade it in, that’s what I did with my 12 and it fits just fine :)

    Thanks bensmiata, The thought crossed my mind, but I'm sure that the dealer taking it in trade will want the spare.
    However, you are saying that any Prius (and presumably) a Corolla compact spare will fit the Prime?
    As stated above, the tire size is the same, but I am concerned that the bolt pattern will be different
    on the Prime, as it has different rims.

    It has an ever so slightly different offset (old Prius to new Prime). Would just keep the spare from your old car, easiest way to get one, and you know it fits. The dealer will screw you on the trade anyways.

    Just doing some homework:

    2010 Prius spare wheel rim is number 4 here:

    Wheels for 2010 Toyota Prius | Toyota Parts

    with part number:

    42611-20841

    And price through McGeorge Toyota: $71.45


    2016 Prius spare wheel rim is number 3 here:

    Wheels for 2016 Toyota Prius | Toyota Parts

    with part number:

    42611-47630

    And price through McGeorge Toyota (again): $71.45

    I suspect either would be fine, the bolt pattern would be identical, and the only difference (if any) might be a slight change in the offset. I'd also suspect there's no difference between prime rims and 4th gen rims. Technically, there is no spare for the prime, which seems to "stir the pot", when you're trying to acquire one.

    Personally, if a car doesn't come with a spare, I wouldn't buy it. Why buy something you're not satisfied with? Something you'll need to immediately start cobbling with.

    I bought an unused spare tire/wheel from a wrecked Gen 3 for $30. It fits my prime and is cheap insurance. Check wreckers in your area that handle Prius.

    That maybe true. And dealer will screw the next buyer of the trade-in vehicle, because dealer will never tell about the missing spare.

    no spare, one fob, no cargo cover, no evse, whatever. dealers don't know and don't care, it's buyer beware.

    Thanks for your replies. mad-dog-one confirms that a traditional spare will fit.
    I am driving a new Prime Premium. The dealer is including a compact spare.
    Even if I wanted to take the spare from my trade, it would be noticed,
    besides, It wouldn't be fitting to get worked up about sleazy dealers (Which I do, and I avoid) if I did something like that.

    So a "doughnut" in the back with a generic vinyl cover. Yes it will take up some
    valuable real estate in the trunk, but it's usually me and one or two other passengers,
    and the folding seats can be used when extra space is needed.

    I used my doughnut from my 2005 on my prime about a month ago. Worked fine.

    My dealer did not know they are all the same, so he gave me a full size spare. Did you know that spare tires on new cars do not have the TPMS valve in them? That’s chinzy.

    Well the dealer gave me a spare - a new conventional tire on an aluminum wheel!
    I'll keep it and try an older Prius doughnut spare as it really crowds the trunk. A link from here to an Ebay auction put me through to a
    junk yard in NY that was selling various Toyota spares. According to his site none of the old spares from Prius or Corolla would fit the new Prime.

    Could somebody explain how to store a donut spare "over the battery?"

    I am tired of this heavy object sliding around in my trunk and taking up half the cargo space.

    I just got the rubber cargo mat and am hoping that the donut spare tire will not slide around so much.
    I am more concerned about the spare acting as a projectile during a crash. Headline: “The driver was uninjured by the crash, but was decapitated by the unrestrained spare tire in the car.”

    I don't think there is any space saving method, at least that I am aware of. The lack of space had to be the one of primary reason Toyota omitted spare on Prime. I usually do not carry my spare in the car. I am keeping a full size spare in garage. I have not done it, but when I feel I need to carry it with me in the car, I plan to put it on one of the seat and put seatbelt on.

    I have a thick rubber mat and there is also like a black cardboard, I tied it upright to block anything coming forward I’ll take a picture tomorrow.
