ok guys I just bought a 2002 prius hybrid. I drove it home it ran fine no problems just check engine light. ok I went and got my tag and stuff done today. So the wife and I took it out. we went about 2 miles it ran fine then the triangle of death came on and had loss of power. I took it to have the codes read and got these P0171 system too lean,P3190 Poor engine power,p0340 cylinder 4 miss fire,i figure ok it has 215,000mi ao I need to replace the plugs and check the coil pack.. It still had the 1/2 tank of gas from the p/o( told me it has been sitting for about a month) so I filled it with fresh gas and it started running like its suppose to.took it out on the interstate ran it up to about 90 and run fine. then all the lights came on again but it run ok. SO now its home I got to looking and it had the wrong battery in it and wasn't in the holder. so I removed the cables and the safety latch on the drive battery. I hooked the battery back up and all I got was the drive battery no ICE. I limped it back home and now it tries to run after I reset the computer by pulling the wires off the connector at the battery.the check engine light comes back on the car fault warning comes on, I go to crank it it runs fine for about 30 sec and dies and that's all I can get out of it. So what do I do now.The ICE isn't starting just the Electrics trying to start.i haven't got to read the codes or get a volt meter to check the battery. I bought this for my daughter for college but no way I can let her have it with the way its acting...
First, there's no coil pack, it's coils in caps on top of each spark plug. It wouldn't hurt to toss a set of new plugs in, tho I'd be surprised if that solves your problem. You may have a bad downstream O2 sensor, again wouldn't hurt too much to replace both (except for your wallet.) Don't use Bosch brand, btw. Use Denso. The battery in the trunk is not the drive battery, it's usually referred to as the aux. battery. Used to activate sensors and relays when you are starting the car. The C1259 is the one that troubles me. I found this: how can i fix a C1259 -error code on a 2003 prius - AutoCodes Q&A Our resident know it alls, EricBecky and ChapmanF. will chime in. Sorry for you troubles.
Actually the drive battery is in the trunk along with the aux battery, anyway i believe the misfire is because of a cracked coil. I put another battery in from another car i had and the ICE started and ran for about 2 min and then it died again. Maybe its not letting the engine run becuase of the fault. But it still doesnt explain why it wont start after i unhooked the battery yesterday.
My HV is over and ahead of the rear axle. Whatever that means. So did the IC restart after it went off? Turn the a/c on and the max switch on. That will keep it from shutting the IC down when the HV is fully charged. Is it still setting codes, red triangle of death and all that? Do you have the manuals? Theres a whole separate book of diagnostics for the Gen! How are you pulling the codes? Techstream mini vci are better suited than generic scanners, or Torque app and a bluetooth dongle.
If you don't yet have a way to read codes or to query the traction battery state of charge, hold off on doing stuff until you do. You use some of the traction battery charge with every start attempt, and if the engine doesn't run under its own power long enough to replenish that, you'll eventually have not enough to keep trying. Then you'll be in a jam, because chargers for that thing after not around every corner. -Chap
Ok, I totally get the cracked plug boot can be the source of misfire. I agree 100%. As for " the ICE started and ran for about 2 min and then it died again", isn't this what a Prius is supposed to do?
I just used a cheap code reader to read those codes.i didnt think of running the ac to keep the engine running ill try that.now this is whats its doing, i let it set all day yesterday and started messing with it last night, the first time instarted it it ran exactly like it is suposed to. I ran up and down my road a few times and it was fine. I cut it off and restarted it, it was on all battery and then it went back into limp mode.the traction battery is at about 75 percent charge. When i stop it quits pulling going forward but has reverse. I can let it sit for a few minutes and unplug the power cable from the aux battery and it runs fine then it throws the main car problem light and shuts down
I havent had time to really try to figure out whats up with it prob be monday before i can really get into it
I have been watching the hv battery voltage level through the display. So far ive got it running long enough to keep the battery charged. Im not letting that thing die lol
I also been watching the aux battery voltage through the nav display it stays between 12.7 and 12.6 volts with nothing on and drops about 11.7 with the headlights and brakelights on
That was before i pulled the battery out of my tahoe. Just so happens its not too much bigger than the one thats in it. I was thinking maybe low voltage could have been the problem.but it did crank and run after i switched batteries though it had 12.7 volts with the tahoe battey
I would like to be able to use my laptop as a diagnostic too but cant spend an arm and leg what do you guys recommend
Get the mini vci with techstream from ebay or amazon. Look for the latest version and make sure that it's compatible with your laptop. Best $40 +/- you can spend. I have a laptop solely for checking cars and nothing else. Without the means to read ALL the codes in your car, you're spinning your wheels. A can of sea foam in the gas tank wouldn't hurt it either.

A code reader and/or TechStream is a necessity for these vehicles, if you have any serious intent of keeping one alive. The vehicle is the first of its type, and now 16 years old. Well, eliminate fuel as a possible source by spending a bit extra and fill with premium gas at the next opportunity, plus a bottle of Techron to clean out the fuel injectors. From the symptoms so far, I would guess that your electric batteries are ok, but the ICE is having difficulty. New plugs, air filter, and clean the carb intake and MAF sensor are in order as next steps. If you've done all the "reasonable" things and it still misbehaves, get an opinion from your local Toyota dealer. Pay the coin once to get it fixed right (or at least a local up-close-and-personal inspection of the problem) and get a nice-driving car. At this age (and mileage), it's possible that there is a problem with the hybrid regen system, and that's a tough nut to crack both for a new owner and us at long distance.
Ok i checked the codes and got a p9131 and a p3190 codes,so im gonna try cleaning the maf and tbody and see what happens
Also make sure your catalytic converter isn't clogged from previous issues. That's what I've just done using cataclean product then driving like you stole it style. My 2001 prius is now running 99% sweet. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
