OK, here's the story's conclusion. I just got my car back from a shop down the street, 5 minute walk. They worked a half day today on Christmas Eve. They would not use my parts because of insurance reasons so I paid $150 per control arm. Still better than $264 each at Toyota. It came to $664 including alignment. The car drives better. I must have been slow boiled because I didn't realize it was driving bad.

Here are the control arms. The guy at the shop said the salt and calcium attack the rubber. I suppose that's the cost of living in Buffalo.

I feel that I got a fair deal not that the dealer was trying to do me, its just how they roll. If you're in the Buffalo area I recommend Bailey Tire. I've been getting my tires here for awhile.

    Thanks everyone for the help.

I'll start in with the following benefits:
    - The winters are relatively mild for temperature
    - Niagara area including vineyards
    - Toronto's not too far away
    - Affordable real estate

Be careful with aftermarket parts. There's a lot of junk out there, and poorly made suspension bushings tend to fail quickly.

I'd find a good independent to do the job and let him/her provide the parts. My local tire shop changed some suspension arms on my BMW last month with Moog components and gave me a lifetime warranty on parts and labor.

You started out right but then did what you just said not to do. Moog in the last few years has gone the same route as everyone else.

    China

Last year I bought some Moog stab links from Rock Auto. The quality was so poor the bolt couldn't thread on the end. I called Rock and they said to throw them out and they would credit me and they did. Nothing is as good as OEM especially OEM BMW.

A failed suspension part is minor compared to the other problems the car might have with 203K miles.

For $6500 you could get a lower mileage Prius. Keep shopping.

Like a bad penny I do show up occasionally. Although I no longer contribute on a regular basis "having sold the Prius, and bought a Lexus GS450H" I do check in, and if there is anything flagged up at the top of the screen I try to help if I can.

The GS450H proves that a hybrid does not have to be slow. weighing 2 tons it does 0 to 62 in 5.2 seconds, and has an electronically limited top speed of 165 mph returning 41mpg (UK gallons)

Not sure this will help...but I recently completed a front suspension overhaul on my 2012 Prisu v (wagon).

Suspension component torque specs? | Page 3 | PriusChat

There is much more discussion of you look at the entire thread. Lots of discussion about research I did before the job...and the problems I ran into. Note that on the Gen3 and Prius v (wagon) you DO have to jack the passenger side of the engine up about an inch to get one of the control arm bolts out. It was a little scary doing this but went well using a trick that is documented in the thread above.

Obviously the Gen2 will differ but I think they are similar enough that it might be of some benefit.

Edit : Oops..didn't see that this is a really old thread before I posted the above...the recent posts made it pop up in my 'new posts' list I guess. (y) At any rate I'll leave it here for any DIY'ers that come across this thread.
