Each work day is a round trip, 60 miles. Happily living in a mild climate, he drove 95% of his 15000 miles going to and from work. But one day, his wife and kids decided to take a family vacation. In Antonio's Ford Focus ST, the family drove 750 miles round trip (aka. 5% of 15000) to Grandmother's home. It took 6 hours to drive 375 miles on each leg with a 1 hour picnic break in the middle. Counting loading and unloading, 8 hours, one day travel each way. But they had to eat baloney and mayonnaise sandwiches because they didn't have a lot of money for even McDonalds. In Antonio's Ford Focus Electric, the family drove 120 miles, got a room and charged 5 hours over night the first day. The second day, they drove 120 miles and stopped again to charge. The third day, they reached Grandmother's home having taken three days versus the one day travel in the Ford Fusion ST. When they got home, there was a family 'intervention' that told Antonio an EV would not work. The hotels ate up the money saved by the EV commuting. The next day, Antonio replaced his car with a used, BMW i3-REx. It fully covered electric commuting and then came the vacation. Antonio drove the BMW i3-REx 100 miles on the first leg and stopped to refuel. His wife and daughter appreciated the stop, his son got a snack, and he got a beverage. The next leg was 70 miles and again another quick fuel and bathroom break. But this time, his son got front seat and his wife and daughter were in the back. The third leg, his wife drove the car and Antonio took a cat nap in the back. The fourth leg, that day, arrived at Grandmother's home. So what was the question? Bob Wilson ps. Was the 3.1 kwh per mile as reported by the car? What about the charging losses? These things probably cancel each other out. But the 3.1 kwh/mile is quite low for most of the current fleet.
