Hi all, I have a 2008 prius at 131k miles and have recently had the issue of no lights on the dash and through google searches, figure it is the combination meter starting to fail. It happens intermittently, usually when it is really cold outside and will sometimes fix itself in the middle of the drive or when I put gas in the car. Called the dealer and I am out of warranty for it and they wanted $952 to repair. Absolutely ridiculous. Has anyone in Chicago gotten this replaced/fixed at an independent dealer for a more reasonable price? Looking for any info as I do not want this to keep happening but have no desire to pay the dealer almost 1k to fix this problem. Thanks.

    welcome!
my daughters 2008 had this problem a few months ago in the cold, but it turned out to be a bad 12v.

if it is the meter, check with steve at autobeyours in scottsburg, in.

Thank you, bisco. Do you have any advice on how to figure out which one it is? I am not a mechanically inclined person, haha. Should an independent mechanic be able to figure it out?

they should be able to test the 12v pretty easily. all they have to do is put a volt meter on the jump point under the hood, after the car has been off a few hours. you want to see at least 12.5 volts.
any idea how old it is?

call steve for better advice. he's a member here, and a great guy.

    Welcome to PriusChat!!

Might be a good time to call Matt @ Texas Prius Battery Replacement

He offers Combination meters with a lifetime warranty, including shipping for $150 (plus core).

Of course, someone (or yourself) will need to install it. But there are plenty of how to videos and write ups around.

My independent mechanic quoted me $120 to install a rebuilt one from eBay. Labor only. Is that a realistic price and should I go that route?

How much is a rebuilt combo meter from eBay, and does it come with a warranty?
