Here is how the different types of fuel efficient cars came out: Type sales % of efficient % of total sales 1 Total Fuel Cell 151 00.22% 00.01% 2 Total Diesel 10986 16.33% 00.70% 3 Total PHEV 11236 16.70% 00.71% 4 Total BEV 12996 19.31% 00.82% 5 Total Hybrid 31918 47.44% 02.02% 6 Total Efficient 67287 100.00% 04.26% 7 Total Auto Sales 1580000 100.00% BEV will need to more than triple to overtake hybrids. Regardless, the 4.26% is a good start. I'll be a lot happier when it reaches 10%. Bob Wilson
Most of us are fairly agnostic on plug-ins - that is bev versus phev. Even the science experiment phevs - vw's xl1, porsche 918, and now mercedes project 1 push forward plug-in technology. I would break it down to more to plug-ins and not worry about whether they are bev or have an engine. Type sales % of total sales 1 Total Fuel Cell 151 00.01% 2 Total Diesel 10986 00.70% 3 Total Plug-in 24232 01.53% 4 Total Hybrid 31918 02.02% 5 Total Efficient 67287 04.26% 6 Total Auto Sales 1580000 100.00% Plug-ins look like they will over take hybrids next year or the year after in the US. Diesels may grow in full sized vans and pick up trucks but appear to not be competitive with phevs in cars or suvs. In scandavia and china, plug-ins already rule the day. The performance market is going to get segmented to the nostalgia side with cars like the corvette, challenger, and mustang, or they will get a plug.
