    Hi All,
Had a strange problem over the weekend. My ABS, VSC and yellow (!) warning lights came on along with the red (!) hand-break on warning light whilst I was driving. When I restarted the car they were clear but came on again during the drive.
I check for DTC codes using my phone application but it came back as 0 codes (a small number of cylinder misfires (4) were registered for 1 cylinder).
Any Ideas what this could be? I am expecting to have to take the car for work but I would like to have an idea before I go as to what to expect.
    Thanks,
    Phil

    Welcome to Prius Chat (y).

    Some questions:

    • How many miles on your Prius?
    • Have you had any recent maintenance performed?
    • Does the car have a clean history?
    • Do you (or the mechanic) you take it to have Techstream software?
    • Do you notice any difference in performance since the lights have come on?
    • Have you tried disconnecting the 12v battery and seeing if the codes return?
    Keep us posted (y).

    Hi Ray,

    Mileage is 59,169
No recent Maintenance 12v battery was replaced on 10th November 2017
No Major accidents just some scrapes!
No Idea if they have techstream - I believe my car is the only Gen II in Malaysia (They sell the Gen III here)
No difference in performance as far as I can tell.
Ill try disconnecting the battery later tonight after I get back from work (Prius is at home)

    Thanks,

    Phil

Couple of things for your next steps:

    • That’s awful low mileage, but that can be bad for the traction battery. How long have you owned your Prius?
    • How many miles have you put on it?
    • Get a 12 volt reading in the battery in the morning of after it has been sitting for awhile. What is that reading?
There are codes there. They will tell you the next steps ;).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

I bought it in November 2011 from the 1st owner who imported it from the UK (new). I've put just under 30k miles on it.
I changed jobs a few years back so I'm only 2 miles from the office so i don't do big distances regularly now.
The info I am getting from my scanner is showing all the main traction cell voltages are good! We have fairly consistent temperatures all year round here (but hot) so I don't think it gets the same stress as if in winter/summer cycle

Heat is the enemy of batteries ;).

That short of a drive may not get the battery the frequent use it needs:(.

Can you post up some pictures of the voltages you are reading?

    Keep us posted (y).

    No Joy for the reset.
Looks like a trip to the garage later.
    I've attached the battery readings.

I didn’t see a SoC PID, can you add that? Also, the IR PIDs need one more decimal place of precision ideally, if that can be adjusted. Normally they are in the range of 0.019 - 0.032 Ohms. If IR variance is spread, that may indicate a HV battery problem, but otherwise I don’t see anything about which to worry. If they are around 0.024 - 0.026 Ohms, then nothing too serious.

If your scan tool can see the HV battery PIDs then, it should also show the DTCs.

You did not show any HV battery DTCs, so I am thinking your worries are elsewhere.

Yes its not showing any DTC's which is why i was confused as to the causes of the problem.

Make the Prius READY, and look at the inverter coolant reservoir. Do you see fluid turbulence in the reservoir? If you do not, the inverter coolant pump has failed (located behind the left headlight assembly. "Left" is from the point of view of the rear of the car, looking towards the front.)

The skid control ECU is guaranteed to have logged DTC given the presence of the warning lights described in your message. However your phone is not able to pick those up.

    Thanks Patrick,
I'll check the inverter pump later.

The skid-control ECU has this strangely underappreciated ability to talk to you with light blinks, if you don't have a suitable scan tool to get the codes that way. A short piece of skinny wire is all it takes.

    Got the codes:

    ABS: 42
    VSC: 45
    (!): 41 42 49

    Thanks

Time to measure the voltage across the 12V battery, when the car is IG-OFF.

Couldn't find my multimeter this morning so was unable to measure the aux battery voltage. So I reset the Codes via the jumper and went for a quick test drive and all was ok. Stopped and set of for work 30 minutes later and the lights are back!

ABS: 42 & VSC: 45 don't appear to be valid blink codes for the respective systems. Can you please reconfirm the blink codes for the ABS and VSC?

((!)) (or ECB) codes are C1241, C1242 and C1249 respectively.

I would be focused on the 12 V battery and ensure it is in good condition and fully charged before moving on to other areas.

Detection Item and Trouble Area for the ECB Codes:

    DTC No. Detection Item
    INF Code
    Trouble Area
1 C1241/41 Low Battery Positive Voltage or Abnormally High Battery Positive Voltage
    • 81
    • 82
    • 83
    • 84
    • ABS NO. 1 relay
    • ABS NO. 2 relay
    • Harness and connector
    • Skid control power supply circuit
    • Brake control power supply assembly
    • Hybrid control system
    2 C1242/42 Open in IG1 / IG2 Power Source Circuit
    • 87
    • 88
    • ABS NO. 1 relay
    • ABS NO. 2 relay
    • Harness and connector
    • Skid control power supply circuit
    • Brake control power supply assembly
    • Hybrid control system
3 C1249/49 Open in Stop Light Switch Circuit
    • 520
    • Stop light switch
    • Stop light switch control
    • Stop light bulb

It would help if you could get the INF codes too, which any good scan tool or Techstream could retrieve from the FFD (freeze frame data).

The next message explains why I underappreciate the blink codes...
Since many posters who try to rely upon the blink codes report two-digit numbers which are not documented, it seems like those codes are not tremendously useful except to tell the OP to check battery voltage which is the default response, anyway.

    Thanks All,

I am currently getting hold of a new multimeter so I can test the battery.
I did take a quick look at the ABS fuses and they were not blown.

    Regards,

    Phil

A quick thought, If the issue is the 12v battery and I replace it will the warning lights stop or will I need to manually clear them vie the jumper on the OBD connector?
