Has anyone ever received a partial VIN from a dealer while waiting for your car to arrive? My salesperson called today and left a message with a "partial VIN" - it's 8 numbers. He said he would get the entire VIN to me when he receives it. I was told the car would be in mid-to-late August. Sounds fishy to me, but I am wondering if this is something that actually happens?

    Thanks :)

The first 8 numbers of the VIN for any '06 Prius will be identical (usually) so he could give you that just to lead you along and not actually have any hard data at all.

at VFAQ.net you can find the VIN decoding info for a prius:

Thanks for that info - interesting. I have the last 8 numbers (no letters). So, if the first 8 are usually the same combo of letters/numbers and I have the last 8 numbers, either the sales guy didn't know about the first 8 or there's something weird going on?

He also gave me a "production number" last week that's 8 digits (starts with a U and is followed by 7 letters). Anyone know what this is?

My dealer did the same thing. He said the first notice they get is a production number, and he gave us that, and then gave us a partial VIN that he said was unique to that car, so that kind of matches efusco's mention that the first letters are always the same, and your dealer saying he had the last 8 digits.
