i agree, spread the word about that place because they're definitely ripping people off and do not deserve your business. (and you don't need a new cabin filter that often.)

unfortunately many dealers try to get away with everything they possibly can, and customers who come back again and again only enable them to continue doing so.

And $60 for the cabin filter?!! I bought two Toyota OEM cabin filters on ebay for $18, and installed myself. Check out john's website on these basic simple maintenance stuff that you can do for yourself. www.john1701a.com

I'm not a do-it-yourselfer in the least, so instead of taking my Prius to Jiffy Lube (where I took my prior car, a Saturn) I've chosen to have the dealer service it. So far I've only had it serviced once, but my 10K service is coming up and I've had a good service experience at Toyota of Huntington Beach (and it's 2 miles up the street from my work, so it's very convenient).

On their website, Toyota of HB has a Service Specials page with printable coupons. They advertise $64.95 for the 5K,10K,20K,25K,35K,40K,55K,65K mile service; $114.95 for the 15K,45K,75K,105K mile service and each 'coupon' lists the items that they service (beyond your standard oil change, tire rotation & fluid check). There are some vehicles they list that are exceptions to those prices (heh-heh-heh, mostly SUV's), but the Prius is not one of them.

i feel guilty in that other than one replacemnt of air filter and cabin filter (i just wash the old one and swap em every 5000 miles or so...ya cheap i know) and tire rotations that i do on my own, i only have the oil changed every 5 000 miles at the dealership.

 

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I will never go back to a stealership except for warr work. I've been lucky enough to have a local garage who is very good and less expensive then any dealer. I've owned 5 toyota's over the years. I learned my lesson once a long time ago. If you have a good local guy, Stay with him.

I would definately be asking questions on why they charge you to have a service ro written. That to me is just plain stupid. That oil filter is like 45 bucks too high. What kind of lube is used? The chasis is sealed. What supplies are used? Is this for disposal of oil, or disposal and supplies like the drain plug gasket?

What people don't understand is that dealerships are an independant business that sells a product. They don't directly work for Toyota, but merely AutoWay dealership.

Why is a cain filter so high at the dealership? Because you are buying it from the dealer and they are installing it. Of course you can get it cheaper on ebay and do it yourself. That is like going to the dentist and saying why is your services so high?

Easy, Word of mouth. I go to the same garage my parents go to. Close to 24 years now. The original owner sold it to a younger guy who was just like him. Fair, Honest and Prompt.

In The Netherlands, the importer advises 119 Euro for small service, which is at 15,000 - 45,000 - 75,000 km etc.
For that, the dealer should: change oil and filter, check battery, tires and tire pressure, check the horn, read diagnostic system, check doors ( closing, switches) check front brake disks, brake pads and lines, check windshield wipers and washers, check seatbelts, lights and seats.

On 30,000 - 60,000 - 90,000 km there is a large service, which is 206 Euro.
I won't list what the dealer is supposed to check, unless you are interested.

The coupon lists the items they service, but does it say anywhere that the cost of the items that are to be replaced is included in that price? My guess is that they are extra. Checking your cabin filter can be considered a "service". Replacing said filter can be and often is a separate, distinct and extra charge.

Yes most dealerships inspect certain parts in the service. However if it needs to be replaced, that is extra.

They charged $60 bucks to do a 2 min job, that's why I was suprised by how much they charge GeorgeG. My local dealer charge $30. Still I think that's way too expensive for such simple thing. That's why I choose to do it myself.

 

My service tech charges me about $10.50 for oil and filter, then takes his wife out for dinner at whatever place she likes on my dime so I end up paying another $30 for that...

So, I pay just over $40.50 for my oil changes.

And my wife usually picks a place I like too.
