I am trying to figure out the key lock system on my 2014 Prius 2, to find out what would happen if I walk away and accidentally leave the car running (for example, in the garage at night). If I have the key fob in my pocket and take it with me away from the car, it beeps three times and keeps running. If I leave the key fob in the car, it keeps running and nothing happens. Occasionally when I get into the car I get a tone alert and a display that a key is detected, even though the car isn't running. I don't have a navigation system, although I seem to have an audio display that will show what I'm playing from my iPhone (no manual for the display, I bought the car used). I would be more than willing to purchase an audio display manual if indeed I have an audio display. Suggestions much appreciated.
if you leave the car in ready, it doesn't matter where the fob is, it can be driven until it is shut down, or runs out of gas. i've never understood the 'key detected in car' warning, i think it gets confused sometimes.
This came up because of an article I read about people being killed by carbon monoxide because they accidentally leave their keyless cars running in the garage: The danger of keyless cars: What you should know - WFSB 3 Connecticut. One person said their car shuts itself off after a few minutes if the key fob isn't present. Another said their car beeps and flashes the headlights. I don't think I've ever left the car running in the garage, but... Oh, and I have no idea what the other manual would tell me but it was referenced in the owner's manual when I was hunting for an answer to this.
prius doesn't make enough Co to worry about. there's a thread here about that article. the problem is regular gassers now have the push button start, but the engine never shuts off.
btw, it's not a good idea to put the fob down in the car. keep it in your pocket. and make a habit of locking the doors when it's in the garage. that will let you know if it's still on.
My fob is always in my pocket or more often in my purse. I never have it just loose in the car. And about 99% of the time when I'm driving I am streaming music from my iPhone through the radio, so that also would change or stop if I leave the car while it is running.
I have a 2014 prius and my key fob stopped locking and unlocking the doors. It still starts the car when im in but once i turn the car off and open the door it beeps at me like the keys are being left in the car. I tried locking it with the switch on the door and it unlocks its self. Ive changed the battery in the fob and nothing changed. What is causing this?
At the last meetup, after RMB had saved my Prius life (that, I will never speak of here), ICE started up and it stopped, EV kicked in and as I walked away with fob in my pocket, an audible long beep emitted. I though it was a CEL, turned out HSI screen displayed “Turn off vehicle.” That I’ve Never seen before.
