I have a 2010 Prius 5, with the advance technology package. What I was wondering is, if there is some way to have it deliver the features of the latest Prius, just by updating softwear, somehow? For example...my adaptive cruise control cuts out when slowing to 24 mph...the new cars I believe will operate to a complete stop and resume automatically....can my system be upgraded to do that? Also...my Lane Keep Assist does a poor job of 'keeping' me centered in the lane...it will only turn the wheel back when it drifts to a line, and then zig zag to the other line, etc.....can that be upgraded to keep the car centered in the lane?
Just one of your items: I've heard 3rd gen LKA is actually better at maintaining lane position; fourth gen is more just last minute save you from going off-road.
Well that's pretty much the way mine operates...when you drift over to the line, it sends you the other way too far, and then sends you back the other way too far....really not useful at all. I've read that some of the new cars (perhaps Nissan?), do an excellent job of keeping you centered. Very useful for those long interstate hauls.... And of course, some cars are so advanced they will safely even pass another car for you.... I am not expecting that much autonomy, and would just be satisfied to stay centered....
Our 2010 Canadian Touring is similar to US "V", but doesn't include the lane-keep, and just has regular cruise. I'm actually ok with that, keeps it simple.

Not expecting anything for my Prius to compare with my cousin's Tesla, but his car does receive periodic 'over-the-air' software updates as they become available...that would be very nice if all manufacturer's would emulate that. My Prius has the hardware that would allow it to perform what an autonomous vehicle can do, if only its software were improved...
No, I don't believe that it has adequate sensors and processing power to do what autonomous vehicles can do.
I suppose you are correct....guess I'll just have to wait for my car's end of life, an buy a new one with the state-of-the-art technology...
I suspect that Toyota had the data, reassessed, and decided that helping with steering too much is a dangerous thing. It promotes distracted driving. I'm of the camp that believes that semi-autonomous driving cars are a bad idea for that reason. Drivers can easily gain too much trust and become less attentive, which can override any gains by being a safety backup. Yet the systems will get confused, because they are by definition not fully autonomous, and will have accidents. But conveniently for the manufacturer (Tesla Autopilot), the drivers are to blame for those accidents. Automatic braking systems are proven to improve safety, but automatic steering haven't been, and probably won't be proven, at least until you get to fully autonomous, where you can ride a car reading a newspaper, like a bus.
Honestly, it makes me mad thinking that people can just blame the autopilots for their own stupidity... i want autopilots to come and get better than what they r today. Tesla is level 3 autonomous, which means u can not trust it... But i guess thanks to these morons that think level 3 is self driving it will take a while because of skeptics and new laws and stuff... What i love about my moms 2016 auris with TSS is that it doesnt turn u into the lane right away. Like, it gives u a chance to react. What i dont like about TSS is that the auto braking thing doesnt work under 50km/h. I find that stupid... the new 2018 TSS does got auto brake down til 30kmh. But yea, i think Tesla will be the first to mainstream level 5 autonmous cars, thats for sure, autonmous cars is proven to be WAY better then human drivers since like 95% of all accidents is human errors. I would love to have TSS so my car could go in traffic by its own tho, steer and brake and all that.
