    Oh Mendel, I love you. Your replies are always so detailed....but we don't all have time to soak the clips like you. :whistle: :). I wish I was retired!
    Not to mention they would've just sprayed some brake cleaner in that EGR and called it good. :eek:

    Drove about 100 miles today, mostly highway. Wasn't expecting to see a difference, nor even looking for it.... but I am, without a doubt, getting about 5mpg improvement on the highway. Was usually 48, now averaging 52-53mpg. Around town has seen an improvement as well.

    Secondly, I opened up the catch can today and there's already about a teaspoon of oil in there! (y)

    Not to mention money saved for DIY and avoid potential ICE problems. :)

    Just to cluck: you guys change your oil like clockwork, but the recommended US brake inspection interval, 30K or 36 months (whichever comes first): not so much... :(

    That is not the regular "visual inspection", check your booklet.

    A quick note regarding brake work: Mind your grease!

    I did the rear brakes on my '13 V last fall. Changed the pads & rotors, and disassembled/cleaned/lubed the slide pins.
    I used the same brake lube I've used on every car I've owned in the last 20 years -- on European, American, and Japanese vehicles.[​IMG]
    When I inspected them this last weekend, the pins were bound up. I had to resort to grabbing the ends with pliers and prying on the pliers with a pry-bar in order to get the pins out. When I inspected the pins and the bores -- everything looked to be in great shape. I cleaned them up, regreased and began reassembly. But the pins would not go back into the bore!
    The rubber seals near the tips of the pins had swollen just enough that they had earlier been causing the pins to bind, and now would not allow the pins to go back in the bores.
    I ordered a seal kit, and will finish the job this weekend.

    My advice: use only silicone grease on the slide pins.

    Edit: to be clear, the above linked Permatex grease is an excellent product, and I will continue to use it for brakes (pad backings and other points of contact) and other applications. It just appears to not be compatable with the Toyota seals in the brake slide pins.

    The seal kit includes the rubber rings on caliper pins? Can you post numbers?

    That's alarming. The rubber rings on the pins (is it the rears just, fuzzy memory) are the first I've encountered. Toyota's Repair Manual instruction for brakes uses a very generic description for pin lube, and no special warning, that there's a proprietory lube, say similar to the transaxle fluid warning.

    FWIW, Sil-Glyde Brake Lubricant has worked for me, has been on there for about 5 years and 50K kms, but now I'm wondering. Some of my notes:

    Toyota Repair Manual description caliper pin grease:

    "lithium soap base glycol (rubber) grease"

    And this is maybe the kosher stuff, forget from where I got the info, maybe @ChapmanF :

    Toyota Disk Brake Grease III, tube 100 gm, p/n 08887-02706

    When I google the above, the closest I find on Amazon is this:



    Description of the above:

    Genuine Toyota (08887-80609) Brake Caliper Grease

    (if above link not working, try temporarily switching off ad-blocker)
    ($38 (US), for a wee tube?!)
    (Hah: only $79 (CDN) on Amazon.ca.)

    with another part number, maybe updated? There's also mention of a few other products, in the "customers who bought this also bought" section, including "3M 08943 Clear Silicone Paste", which might be the stuff @NutzAboutBolts in his video, mentioned below.

    I watched @NutzAboutBolts video on the rear brake pin lube again, see he just says "clear silicone paste". Maybe he can comment, what brand.

    Rear: CARLSON 16204

    Front: CARLSON 16153

    Search those numbers and they are available at a number of suppliers online.

    Thanks for the numbers, see them on EBay, and salted away.

    The Permatex Lube you pictured above says something about metal-to-metal contact only, which might be a euphimism for not compatible for some rubber?? I see there's also this:

    And it says "Compatible with most plastics and rubbers used in Disc Brake Caliper systems".

    This seems very topical. He's saying some brake pin lubes are good, but swell rubber, while others (including Sil-Glyde) are ok. Mentions Carlson rebuild kits too.

    Yeah the sliding pin rubber end swelled up on my 2001 Honda Accord as well. Not sure who serviced it last or what silicone greased was use, it was the first time I’ve encountered that issue, luckily Winchester auto had a kit so I could change it the same day. Make sure to use the proper silicone grease or else that can happen.

    Well a couple of data points, mine and that video, indicate the Sil-Glyde Brake Lubricant is ok, ie: suitable for caliper pins, and doesn't swell rubber. Back of the tube also recommends for rubber parts. Obviously there are others, but it's one pick that's readily available in North America, and pretty cheap.
