Your Last Car Before Your Prime

2011 Prius.

 

2010 VW Tdi Jetta Sportwagen. 6MT. It was a lovely car.
50.2 lifetime MPG
Dieselgate; turned in back in to VW and spent the money on the Prime.

 

Had citroen xantia 2.1L td. 5.8L/100km or >44 mpg diesel. So kind of efficient ( but not clean . I loved the hydropneumatic suspension and really miss it. But i could not bring it to USA as the brake system was not intependent. Making it illegal in america. (Law Rubbishness: google it). The comfort of the prius Prime is pretty close, though not as smooth. Also that car was 275000km 14 y old. Had to sell it for 300 euros. Broke my heart as it was worth more just with the almost new tires.

And I thought I was the only one who went from a Cadillac STS to a Prius Prime.

I had a 2009 STS with the Northstar V8 and AWD. It was a GM "executive car" which had every possible option installed. When I bought it, it was eight months old and had about 6,000 miles on it. It came with a GM full five year warranty which I later extended (thank god) until I traded the car in for the Prime last August.

This STS was anything but fuel efficient. But it was nice to drive and I considered the cost of gas to be "an entertainment tax."



Yes... that was the 2009 sticker price -- which is equal to about $81,872 in 2017 dollars!

The items marked with a * and shown in red are included on the Prime. The others are not.

The Prime, of course, has quad LED headlamps instead of the High-Intensity Discharge, a USB/MP3 player instead of the CD player/changer, Toyota Safety-Connect instead of GM OnStar Safe+Sound, and the very credible synthetic SofTex® instead of leather.

In addition, the Prime has a rear-view back-up camera, parking proximity sensors, a Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charger, rear cross-traffic detect, and a number of other features not available from Cadillac in 2009.

Finally, I need to note that I am a bear-sized bear. Amazingly, the Prime has pretty much the same leg room, head room, and shoulder space for the driver.

And as I haven't put any gas into the Prime since last November, I get all of the above without "the entertainment tax" -- and any environmental benefits are just a bragging-rights bonus.

No, it was sacrificed to the *EV gods. My end game is a Tesla but amazing tax credits let me buy the Prime while waiting. The Prime is a REALLY good car and outstanding value ... but it is not the car I want.

 

2008 Prius touring. 89k miles sold it a year ago privately no mainenance issues at all...only keep cars 8-10 years. Waited for the Prime to be available because it was the only Toyota that qualified for reassignment of our carpool licence plate.

My previous daily driver was a 2007 Lotus Exige S. I needed something a bit more... practical.

Did you trade it in:
No. I sold it private party for much more than any dealer was willing to pay for it.

Were you considering the new year of the same model:
I would love another Cayman! It was seriously one of the best all-around cars I've ever owned/driven. (I've owned: Mustang Bullitt, RSX-S, STi, Exige S, '77 911 Targa). It was comfortable, it was quick, it turned heads all the time, it got ok milage, I could literally take it to Costco and fill it with an entire basket of groceries. The real issue was it only had 2 seats and I needed something that would fit at least one car seat

2004 Prius - averaged 52mpg over its life. Traded in for Prime.
1988 Mazda MX-6 GT Turbo - averaged about 35mpg. Sold this last weekend.

 

I had a 2014 Chevy Silverado. 17 MPG’s.

Because I needed a truck for work.

Wanted a fuel efficient car with the legendary reliability of a Toyota since I drive about 35,000 miles a year. Almost bought a RAV4 Hybrid but I was then told about the Prime Federal Rebate and the fuel economy. Now if I need a truck I can just rent one from Home Depot or UHaul.

Almost 3 weeks into the change. Loving the moonstone interior in lieu of the monochromatic black scheme in the Four Touring. Missing blizzard pearl, though. Thought we should get something a little different as to not have the same thing twice in a row, but I've learned I really prefer it. Nothing against classic silver fans - it's a nice color. I also miss the 17" wheels from the Four Touring.

 

Currently have 15 Odyssey and 09 Accord. Prime is the 3rd car. I need 3 cars for next 6 years as kids would start to drive.

 

Smart move, you save at least $3800/year even if you don't charge the Prime at all.

 

The last car we bought before the Prime was a Model S. Would have bought another Tesla (it's an OK car, and a p85dl would have been acceptably priced), but we felt treated quite poorly so that became out of the question.

 

2014 Ford F-250 King Ranch 6.7L Turbodiesel Pickup Truck. 15 mpg all day long!

 

I know! I charge at night and at charge work with a 110 MGP since I bought it nearly 2 weeks ago. My first Prius and likely not my last.
