Hello. Just replaced my 12V battery and second time I turn the car on the dash / speedometer didn’t turn on. Super bummed hoped the battery would fix this. What’s next?
test the battery, sometimes they are bad. also, the battery connections are important, especially the negative to ground. if not, probably the combo meter.
What the????? Geezzzz rotten luck with this. I have some free time tomorrow I’ll have the shop I bought it at test it.
After driving 20ish miles this morning it’s reading 13.9. But I’m stuck in my drive way because it won’t turn off... Does replacing the Combo meter fix this as well?
This guy says it’s just a soldering job / replacing a bad capacitor. Is this all the repair guys do if I were to ship it out?
Update: new Combo Meter was installed today. Took me 2-3 hours total while juggling my 5 yr old. Shout out to Matt at Texas Hybrid for the replacement board. Worked right away! Until next issue, take care all! Gus07
Yep. Replacing the capacitors is all it takes. All capacitors have a finite lifespan, especially aluminum SMD caps. Just replace all 3 while you are there. I've fixed a few of these, after I fixed my personal car last year. Of course de soldering the old caps without lifting a pad can be tricky without a hot air reflow machine. I use 2 soldering irons, one to heat each pad simultaneously. Then when the solder is molten & the cap is loose I flip it to the side with the irons. I clean up the pads with solder wick, & I use solder paste with flux to solder the new caps on. The combo meter mileage does not need to be reprogrammed when it goes back into the same car it came out of. I took the time to locate caps that are correct form factor, & rated for the longest lifespan at high temps I could find. They are rated to 3000 hours at 105C IIRC. The original caps were only rated for 1000 hours at 105C. Theoretically mine will last three times as long as original. Of course the less time the car spends parked in the sun, the longer the combo meter will last...
You don’t unsolder SMD caps to remove them. That’s unnecessary heat on the pads. And flux is not necessary either. Just grab them with a needle nose and rock them back and forth a few times and the feet break off the cap. Takes about 3 seconds.
