You may have seen it, but it was the first time for me today.

It's an ad for the H3 Hummer. A guy is in line at the grocery store buying tofu, vegetables and other health foods. He looks behind him and sees a guy behind him buying red meat. Our hero turns back and sees an ad for a Hummer. Then we see him driving a brand new one. The ad ends with the caption...

    RESTORE YOUR MANHOOD

    HUMMER H3

    Kinda scary.

BTW, I came up with a ad that takes place a while later....

Scene 1: Parking lot (Caption reads: Saturday). Person carrying grocery bags opening door to Prius. He waves to the guy in Hummer. Guy in Hummer flips him off.

Scene 2: Gas Station (Caption reads: Monday). Closeup of Guy in Hummer filling tank. Person in Prius drives past and waves. Guy in Hummer flips him off.

Scene 3: Gas Station (Caption reads: Wednesday). Closeup of Guy in Hummer filling tank. Person in Prius drives past and waves. Guy in Hummer growls.

Scene 4: Gas Station (Caption reads: Friday). Closeup of Guy in Hummer filling tank. Person in Prius drives past and waves. Guy in Hummer just hangs head.

Scene 5: Parking lot (Caption reads: Saturday). Person carrying grocery bags toward Prius. He sees the Guy no longer driving a Hummer, but a brand new Prius. Guy waves. Person waves back.

    Fade out.

LOL! You should do that for a living. Only thing I would change would be the Days (instead or every other day at the station, it should be everyday). Oh yea, and for us California folk...add a carpool lane driveby with the wave and flip off too!

Yeah, I've seen that one. I find the female one more offensive. The "Get your girl on".

    I like your commercial.

I laughed when I saw the grocery store guy one. That's one of the best non-superbowl commercials to come out, very well done. I notice they show the hummer mpg at the end too. I can't remember the number they showed, but like any mpg rating, expect to get less.

I remember the mpg number they showed to be higher than I expected. Hummer has a reputation for low gas mileage, so I was surprised for it to be that high. This was the H3 too. (smaller body, less weight, smaller engine).

I loved the part where they show the tofu. It would have been excellent if they had time to show him stuffing his groceries in the hatch of a Prius, screetching up to the hummer dealer, then the whole H3 - DING - Keys - Restore your manhood thing. The Tofu was a nice touch, but having the easily identified Prius as another 'wimpy' identifier would have been cool.

**Disclaimer - I don't equate manhood with driving a large SUV or eating/noteating tofu or beef/ribs.

I did think it was a really funny cool commercial that played perfectly on some stereotypes. I haven't seen the girl version of it yet.

My wife said that men everywhere should be absolutely offended by that commercial. I haven't seen it yet.

As far as I'm concerned, if you are that insecure with your manhood and how total strangers perceive you then you have more problems than just the car you drive. It's clear that the man who runs out and plunges himself and his family in debt buying a Hummer just to impress strangers truly has no balls of his own.

I saw GM's hummer TV advertisement. Pretty sorry ad campaign. When peak oil becomes a mainstream issue this ad may become the poster child of pre-peak oil thinking.

While we're talking fantasies, here's another ad: Picture a Hummer at a stoplight, macho male driving and requisite babe riding shotgun. A bicycle pulls up, and the driver looks down at him and sneers. The fearless cyclist asks the girlfriend if she'd like a ride with someone who doesn't need to compensate. She looks her boyfriend in the face, then glances at his crotch. She jumps out giggling.

Or, you see a blue collar guy with a "CAT Diesel Power" hat (think "Cooter" on Dukes of Hazard) hogging up all the chicks at a strip joint. I mean, they're all around him, taking turns giving him lap dances, pulling his hat off and running their fingers through his hair, that sort of thing... two irritated rednecks sitting at the bar shake their heads in disbelief, and one of them cracks out the phrase, "I just don't GIT IT, whas he got DAT we don't GOT?" (slams mug of beer down on the counter)

Then, a bum wearing a Captain hat turns to them and says, "Billy got rid of his truck for wunna dem 'lectric Jap cars... gots all dis money lying around since he don't be buying gas no moe...."

Wait. Are you saying a hummer won't restore my manhood? At least temporarily? No wonder those pills are so popular. :p

Well, it appears that GM is sparing no expense to alienate everyone. I saw an equivilent Hummer commercial a few nights ago with a female "soccer-mom" type at a playground with her kid. Another lady and her child cut infront of "soccer mom" at a playground slide. She's mad - So she buys a hummer...

I saw the ad and was just speechless (ie: Wth???)

(Although in hindsight, you would have to be sort of mad to buy a Hummer, wouldn't you?)

I thought the Hummer commercial was funny and my wife did too. I mean heck... if I were sitting on millions of dollars worth of gas guzzling, overpriced, large vehicles with a limited market it seems like a reasonable way to try and sell them. I didn't see anything about the commercial I would consider "offensive". Most guys actually do tend to like steak and beer, right?

I would have thought the Hummer execs would fire the guy/gal who made those ads. It says that all their consumers are compensating for something or insecure. I would think they would turn people off.

I saw both ads. I just cannot imagine ANYONE seeing that ad and buying a hummer. Everyone I asked who saw them thinks almost the same thing.... the ads are going to turn off far more buyers then they turn on.

This may be the dumbest advertising they have put on. Even going for the dumb macho crowd is not gonna work unless the truck is actually macho. The H3 has a 5cyl engine and is quite overweight, not at all macho.

Not that it's there yet, but there was a 10-page special section in the Chicago Tribune today about this very issue. It took me an hour to read. And now I am thoroughly depressed.

I think I'm going bicycle shopping.

It's so refreshing to see car companies appealing to our better natures.

My guess is their target market thinks "Right on!" when it sees these commercials. What a bunch of freakin somnambulists.

Looks like their upper mngt figured that out and they have since changed their ads. The new ads are actually much better.
