Picking up Prius Prime today

nope, no regrets whatsoever, been a Prius fan since 2007, was very happy when Prius went plug in then was excited when the Prime came out

 

It's tough to talk Subarists out of their opinion. IMHO, Outback is not in the same category as Prime is. For daily commuting most economical vehicle with best fuel efficiency, I have absolutely no regrets purchasing Prime. That said, I am thinking of Outback as potential second car for us. It is a great SUV for sure.

 

I just wish I was still working and the family needed 2-3 cars! I would look at a Smart EV as my commuter, a Chevy Bolt for short-medium distance family duty and the wife would enjoy the Prime.

Oh, there would also be a late 60s muscle car in there somewhere!

 

No regerts. You will love the PRIME. (Sorry, I was having a Milky Way.)

 

I just wish Prime was out earlier. It is a great commute car, sipping the gas, when you run out of battery.

Nope, not at all. We were also considering a subaru which I bet we would not have any regrets with but we Love our prime

 

After a couple of weeks with my Prime, I am still ecstatic. I have a 12 mile commute to work, so I almost never burn gas. But, having the flexibility of the ICE makes it an extremely useful traveling car. For the "dirty", rough road, and snowy day jobs, I still have our 2007 Honda CRV. It too, is a great car in its own category. I had to sacrifice the 2003 MINI Cooper S as a trade-in on the Prime. I do miss the fun ride, but I don't miss the old car problems that were starting to emerge.

 

My very first Prius Prime ) and I am loving it! Huge fan of Toyota and this EV is super smooth sleek looking Optimus prime bet you will love it!

 

My extended family bought only Subaru for decades, but they lost me when they missed the hybrid boat and now a days they are ignored given my *EV obsession.

why is he sad if he can use the outback when he wants? i would say they are two different vehicles for different purposes.
suburb's are great if you have a lot of inclement weather. prime is great for a lot of different reasons.
suburb may be more comfortable, i have never driven one.

i didn't realize suburb's had a head gasket issue, we have the same on some gen 3 prius engines.
at what mileage did they fail?

We've owned our 1st Prius Prime for 2 months now. I commute 64 miles RT, 5 days/week. Prior vehicle was a 2009 Hyundai Sonata which had 160K miles. The Prius is fantastic! I have NO regrets, I only wish it had longer EV range for my EV needs. The Prius Prime is an exceptionally efficient PHEV and a pleasure to drive. I use EV mode everyday and the computer puts me at an avg 121 mpg. I filled up 3 weeks ago, have a little over an 1/8th of a tank left and I'm over 1100 miles. On weekends I'm able to do all my running around in EV so I burn no gas. I only wish I could plug in at work but I'm working on it as my EV range for commuting would likely be at or near 100%. I'm getting 34 EV miles per charge and depending on how I use it I tend to get 35 to 36 EV miles overall.

I am so hoping for a BEV Prius version hopefully in the VERY near future! I would buy it in a heartbeat! This car has definitely changed my belief of EV commuting and has pushed my desire to go 100% BEV to an obsessive level. The Prime is a great vehicle, especially transitioning from a 100% ICE. I would not give it another thought over any ICE car on the road. We are a 2 car family and will keep our 2nd ICE car for now as my kids are in their teenage years. Once they are on their own, we will definitely have one BEV and one PHEV for extended range. I will never never go back to a 100% ICE. It's not just the $ savings on gas but the fact of how much gas we are NO longer burning. We've easily cut our gas consumption by 75% and it makes me want to do better.

Toyota was one of the leaders in the late 1990s with their Rav4 EV. They make excellent vehicles with a consistent and solid reputation. My brother owned a 1976 Corolla that lasted 12 years and was still running. I am really hoping Toyota jumps back into the BEV market as stated by 2020! As far as the Subaru, it's easy for people easily get attached to vehicles for certain reasons which is understandable. I am now very attached to our Prime and will not look back. I know several work colleagues and friends that have one version of the Prius and they swear by them which was a large factor in our decision to buy the Prime. You've also cut your maintenance demands compared to a 100% ICE by a huge factor.
I would say without hesitation you've made an excellent choice! Enjoy!

 

...kayak in the Outback? I actually do that with my minvan but its a smallish 10-ft kayak and a big vehicle.

 

Just a question: is he sad at the Prime or at a Prius in general or a non-Subaru? Would a Prius non-Prime make him happier? The Prime's a great vehicle -- if our garaging situation were a bit different and they had a sunroof, we would've probably gotten one -- but we got (another) Prius and love it.

 

I don't think you will find many (if any) members complaining about their Prime's. It truly is a remarkable vehicle if economical driving is something you wish to have. It makes a perfect commuter car for work on EV and then thanks to the gas provides extended range for longer outings. It's far from perfect though and I don't think we would have considered it had we not had our SUV for outdoor activities such as you describe.

I think it's funny how the people who own the prime seem to have to justify it to everyone else (sometimes even themselves it seems)...and people who don't seem to do everything in their power to put it down like its some kind of abomination. Something about Prius's just bring out the passion on both sides.
