Is the Gen 4 Prius better than the Gen 3 Prius?

Yeah, kinda like there's ECO mode, and Prius Eco.

Prius TWO Eco or Two Eco. Apparently Toyota themselves do not know. The website uses first letter uppercase, but the brochure is all uppercase.

I've only driven the '14 Prius C Three and my '18 Two Eco. The '14 C has some of the newer Gen 4 tech, mostly in the HSI screens, but the difference between the C and the Gen 4 ride is staggering. I have never driven a Gen 3 Prius so I can't speak to that, though the tech seems a little dated in those. I get a lot of enjoyment out of driving my Gen 4 and look forward to times when I can drive it

 

It's debatable. For example, to switch between mph and kph with my 2010, I have a simple button on the dash. The fourth gen, you have to dive into menus to affect that change, I believe. And: some of the early fourth gen, they screwed up, and you're SOL if you've got a mph car (for example): cross the border into canada, no kmh for you. Updates are not always progress.

Just bought a Gen 4 Prius Four last night. Had perhaps the first Gen 3 (Prius 3) in the county and finally traded it in.

Pretty much everything is an upgrade. Storage is a downgrade. Entune is a disappointment. But everything else is an obvious upgrade. (Some of it might be due to the Three to Four upgrade, but most of it is the newer generation.)

I haven't tried switching to KM yet, but I'd mention that the KM/MPH button in the Gen 3 only change the speed indication. I had hoped it would change the mileage indicator as well -- relatives outside the US wanted to know what kind of mileage we get -- so perhaps the new version does that?

 

I think the function is still the same: just switching the speed units.

 

There is some more than that. It switches units on at least some the consumption graphs too.

I’ve only had Gen4 for 2 weeks.
More quiet, better mileage, softer ride (could be the R15 soft winter tyres though).
Love the new info displays.
Much better on highways (mileage and handling) IMO, same thing when I changed from gen2 to gen3.

But same cons as everyone else, miss the storage spaces; trunk under the floor bin (I used to keep the first aid kit, start cables etc there), second glow box, center console bin....
This time of the year when there is a lot of dust after the winter on the drying roads I also miss the recirc button on the steering wheel (when I saw a truck strir up a dust cloud ahead, I used to turn recirc on for just a few minutes at a time). Harder now when the button is further away.

But so far really happy with gen4.

IMO the old gen3 looks better though.

 

How do you figure? According to the specs the fourth generation has a slightly smaller tank! 11.3G for the 2016 and 11.9 for a gen 3

 

And can a 2009 be a Gen III?

Too bad there is no Gen 4 of the Prius v. I'm not sold on the hybrid Rav4. I'll keep the Prius v until or if Toyota starting to make a car like the v, again.

I have understand the Prius v will still be available but not in the US or Puerto Rico.
@Tideland Prius would know if it is still available in Canada. Importing a new one would be a major undertaking though.

 

I can’t believe no one has mentioned the viewing area from inside has been increased and improved greatly.

I just test drove a 2016 recently and being used to a gen 3, first thing I noticed was how much more I could see in the 2016 compared to a gen 3.

Edit: not sure if the windshield is bigger (it probably is) but had a better viewing experience in the gen 4.

 

I think the "A-Pillar" is slimmer on 4th gen, the pillars between the windshield and the side windows. I notice that in particular going around long/sweeping curves, when where I'm going is right in the middle of that pillar.

Still, I get the sense the rear and rear-corner visibility got worse with 4th gen?
