Anyone actually having trouble refueling?

I have never had trouble filling my '04 as long as I don't worry about how much gas it takes. It is always different! It was only on PriusChat that I learned about the special "tricks" and added some more gas after shutoff (but not much)! There are still parts of the country that have full service stations????? In the Washington area you have to be on life support or dead before anyone would pump gas for you.

Well, it isn't all of the pumps in NorCal, as I've used ones in both the Sacramento area and the East Bay and never had a problem.

 

Not exactly a problem, but something weird happened to me at my last fillup - there was another Prius gassing up at the same time. THAT hasn't happened to me before...

Prehaps you have forgotten how to fill up a primitive gasoline-powered vehicle, darelldd .

FYI, no problems with our Prius - we always manage to get 8-10 gallons in the tank, first click, no problems.

 

I didn't think it was a problem, but I've been only putting in 6.5-7.5 gallons. This must be why I need to fill up after 7 days/370 miles.. I thought I was OK because the gauge was showing all the way full for a good 130 miles. Maybe I need to try starting it up again after it clicks off.

 

I have a dumb question and I can proove it.....

How does the shutoff mechanism of a gas pump nozzle work and what is the mechanism 'sensing' when it thinks it is time to shut off the nozzle?

Hmmm. Nope. Didn't even consider it since I've heard others with the same issue. Amost embarrassing that I have trouble filling with gas....

 

I used to have trouble with premature nozzle shutoff (and then I found these litte pills...) Seriously though, I got PO'ed enough at this that I got a sharp knife and cut out the gasket around the filler hole. This gasket reduces emissions during filling by sealing around the nozzle and keeping the vapours inside the tank, but the pressure build-up can cause the nozzle to shut off early. Without the gasket, I can fill full speed, and when it shuts off, I'm full (it's consistent too- there's enough room left to round it off to the nearest $0.25, but any more and you risk overflow).. This doesn't help at all with the bladder size issue, so you can still get inconsistent fill volumes, but at least the nozzle shutoff issue due to tank backpressure is eliminated.. I don't view this modification as much of a compromise to emissions, especially if the gas stations in your area are equipped with vapour recovery nozzles.. Heck, no other vehicle out there has a filler seal and many of them achieve PZEV ratings without them..

 

This happened for me for the first time today. I was at 2 clicks out of 10 on my fuel gauge so I stopped at the gas station

Filled 6 gallons just fine, then got weird and wouldn't let me put more than a few drops in at a time. I've never experienced this in my Prius, or any other car for that matter. Definitely not a cold issue, it's 85 degrees here (San Diego) today.

 

Similar refueling issue first time filling my 2019 Prius Prime. The pump keeps shutting off the flow. I thought I had managed to fill the tank only to find out the gauge was still 2 bars down from full. I went back to another pump and after additional shutoffs finally managed to fill the tank. My first try was 2.2 gallons. Second try got in 3.1. 53 mpg on my trip to San Diego and back and the gauge now looks full. Is there something "wrong" with my car or is this typical of the 2019 Prius Prime?

 

i would ask in the prime forum. the gen2 prius had a rubber bladder inside the tank which sometimes did not expand well.
i think i recall another prime owner or two mention fueling problems, not sure of the outcome though.

 

Were you trying to fill in the heat? If so, the vapors May mess with the filling. Try filling at night and see if there is a difference .

I’ve filled our 2019 5 times without issue, and it isn’t as hot up here.

Can you fill in the evening or morning when it’s cooler?

 

I agree with bisco that Gen2 is a different animal.
Gen4 I think has a different system with gate valve that can shut off the flow to the tank, not to mention no flexible tank on Gen4.

I have some probs on an aged Gen2, I guess is the flexible tank is too rigid, but I'd have to drill a hole in the car to visually see if that is the hidden problem...so instead we just complain here we only get 6 gals in there sometimes less.
