Will 86110-47230 work instead of 86110-47081 in 2005 Base Model?

    Hello friends,

I am experiencing a weird issue on my 2005 Prius Base w/Smartkey. Here's what I currently have in my Prius MFD # 86110-47081 and my Stereo is 51807 (non mp3/wma).

I recently purchased a Pure Bluetooth Car Kit from GTA Car Kits. After I installed everything together, this is what's happening intermittently. There are times when I start my car, I will see the message on my MFD "Audio Off". And then I press the Disc button once, the CD Player starts working, when I press the Disc button again to enable the Pure Bluetooth, it doesn't detect it, although the Pure Bluetooth is on because when I try to take a call my iPhone 6 Plus shows iPhone, Bluetooth & Speaker. So it's detecting the car kit and sending the audio there, but my Radio doesn't seem to detect it.

The only workaround I have found to make the PureBluetooth work is: as soon as I start the car and the Prius logo shows up on MFD, I must press the Disc button a few times and then the PureBluetooth Kit is detected.

First, I went through GTA Car Kit, they were nice enough to send me a brand new car kit, I replaced it and got the same symptom.

Then I purchased another radio that was tested pulled from another Prius. I got the same result.

Someone recommended changing the MFD as MFD has control over the radio and other stuff. I was unable to find the same part number 86110-47081 in my local junkyards. I found 86110-47230 (with the backup camera option for 06-09).

When I tried hooking that up, my radio worked as I was able to hear the FM/AM and Disc, but the screen was blank.

My question is, will 86110-47230 work in place of 86110-47081 for atleast the normal functions? I don't have Backup Camera harness nor I am planning to add one.

Also, has anyone experienced the problem where Radio shows Audio Off especially when you have a Bluetooth Kit connected to your Radio?

The MFD will work if you rearrange the wires on the plug; I have done this MFD swap on my 2004 and all functions work..
I don't think the MFD would have anything to do with the bluetooth problem, but if you still need the pin reassignment, I'll post it.

If you have the pin reassignment, I could use it. Bought one from ebay and showed up the 47230 instead of the 47081.

    Thanks

I followed this image I found from a 2008 Prius. Just moved yellow, green, brown, grey, and white with grey. The picture doesn't show the white with grey, but it goes in pin 11.

Can you tell me how you move the pins? Did you just yank it out and force the pin in appropriate slot?

I spent an hour trying to get the pins out. Usually very small screw driver will do the job, you can search on youtube how to re pin a wire harness, but i could not for the life of me get them out, so I cut and spliced and soldered. Not the best work I have ever done but it should out last the rest of this 14 year old car.

I made the change from 2004 base-->2006 w/camera. Here are the pin assignments from the wiring diagrams (Please use a meter to check your existing plug to be sure of the power wires.) You can find pin extractors on Amazon/eBay such as this: Car Wire Harness Terminal Extractor, but I still had one I couldn't get out and just spliced it.

To Re-pin, you need to raise the retainer on top of the plug (similar to this) upload_2018-3-17_8-1-34.png

And then release the individual pins
    upload_2018-3-17_8-3-32.png
I was able to use a small jeweler's screwdriver for the larger wires, but not the small ones.

Hi ITBland, Thank you for posting up this information. I also have a 2004 Base with a 86110-47080. Do you know if the 2006 MFD that you replaced yours with was a 86110-47230?

With your PIN assignemnts, I can see that the Brown, Gray, Yellow, and Violet need to be moved. I'm as bit confused with Jedimaster80's post with regards to a couple of different colors (yellow, green, brown, grey, and white with grey). My goal is just replace mine with a working unit and keep all the same functions as before.

Fond it there the harnesses are different on both upon further inspection so re-pinning won't work for me. Thanks anyways!

    Are the Canada models different?
All you should need is the connector labeled M13 in the post above and move 4 of the pins around:
    • 3 (Brown) moves to 1,
    • 11 (Gray) moves to 2,
    • 12 (Yellow) moves to 3, and
    • 25 (Violet) moves to 20 (this one is tiny and hard to release!)
And, you can add a reverse camera (extra wires and connector needed)
(NOTE: The M14 connector is labeled "C" in my table, has the camera and Bluetooth wires)

I don't think Canadian models are different in this case. That Connector I don't have unfortunately. I'll have to try to go find one. Thank you!

    Wow--incredible detail!

I'm just trying to replace a 2006 MFD with failed touch screen with an equivalent unit. The dealer quoted me $8,700 but was good enough to tell me I needed a 861104-47230c0. I just ordered a used 861104-47230 but have two questions.

What is the dif between 861104-47230c0 and 861104-47230?

    Are there "lock code" issues?

    Thanks.

Assuming you mean 86110-47230-C0, the “-C0” suffix means the plastic trim has a black finish. The part number may sometimes appear without the suffix, but as far as I know, it’s the same part—black is the only color.
I didn’t see anything in the Repair Manual, available by subscription to techinfo.toyota.com, about any reprogramming required when replacing the multi-display assembly.

I have a 2004 that had a bad screen. I found a 2004 with nav cheap at a Pick-N-Pull, bought the MFD and plugged it into my non-nav 2004 and it worked (no nav functions just extra buttons). I kept an eye out for a Prius with backup camera, found a non-nav 2006 in a Pick-N-Pull, got the MFD and camera, re-wired my 2004 plug as stated above, and the 2006 MFD was just plug-n-play in the 2004. The 2006 MFD has bluetooth (phone only), but my 2004 radio does not have the input for it, so no bluetooth (and no errors, it just does not show in the MFD options.)

    @ITBland

How do I remove the small violet wire? I think I destroyed that plastic holding clip inside.

Never mind. I destroyed the plastic internal locking clip on that side for the violet wire. A hard yank and it finally came out. Red triangle is gone now that I moved the violet wire from #25 to #20

The original table above was missing the two illumination wires that must also be moved. Here is the corrected table:
