Oil recommendations- 200k mikes

    Hey, my 2012 prius is about to hit 200k miles.

    What oil do you guys recommend?

    It’s daily driven, ain’t driven softly. Avg 70-80mph, around 40mpg avg per tank.

    Will do it myself for first time.

    Just make sure there is oil in it. At that mileage, consumption is probably an issue.

    If she is not consuming any oil then you should stick with 0W-20. Otherwise follow the above recommendations already posted here and elsewhere. At that mileage, check your oil level often. (y)

    Agree with Bay Starter, stick to 0w-20. And if it's never had 'high mileage' engine oil, don't go with it yet.

    For ATF, Toyota WS will be fine. Some here use Redline as an alternative upgrade from Toyota WS.

    Side note, I logged onto my carfax and noticed maintenance to-do list stops at 180,000 miles. I figured you'd loop back to the 100,000 mi maintenance point when you reach 200,000 mi.

    Mobil 1 Annual Protection 0W-20, (or whatever weight recommended in the manual).

    Surprising nobody gave a specific answer!

    I think everything pretty much does follow a repetive pattern, except coolant change intervals, which are cut in half after the first.

    Probably because no absolute specific brand of oil required. Weight is what matters, if we begin to talk brand, addictives, detergent then another can of worm opens. :p

    There's a certain oil spec as well, besides weight, but I believe most meet it. Doesn't hurt to check though.

    I just opened my manual, and it says ILSAC multi grade engine oil. On the next page there is an API “starburst” symbol. But it doesn’t specifically say it needs that...

    I wouldn’t know if it’s “consuming” any.

    I know it doesn’t leak any, and there is no smoke from tailpipe when ice is running, so doesn’t seem to “burn” any oil either.

    It also has never used any oil than whatever Toyota dealer puts in when i take it in every 8k miles or so.

    It just uses 4 qts right?

    Actually, the engine crank case takes about 4.5 quarts to bring the oil level to the oil dipstick's upper tick. Four quarts puts the level about half way between the dipstick's ticks.(y)

    Guess I'm in trouble. No leaks or engine oil consumption, but smoke always come out of tail pipe every time on park with ICE on.

    Very close, and what's 100 cc between friends, but anyway, the manual says 4.4 US quarts. OTOH, 4.5 seems easier to remember, and if you're consuming any amount: where's the harm, in a very slight overfill.

    just changed it. i was impossible to loosen the filter... tried by hand, and also with the specialized 64mm attachment. i don't know what dealer used to tighten that filter, but i could not get it out. even broke part of the outside filter cover plastic trying to remove it. itll stay there until next oil change, which i will take to dealer cause its a hassle. also noticed when i drined the old oil in to the almost empty 5Qt bottle, it got barely half full so definitely consuming oil somewhere..

    Use a 1/2 breaker bar, it’ll break that filter loose.

    Once I had 'hand' tightened an oil filter and also couldn't get it loose on the following oil filter change, ended up using a pipe wrench to grab and remove it.

    You might want to check the oil level more often now that you know you are using.

    Honda's automotive oil filter socket might be worth a try, it's correct size. I'd second long handled 1/2" wrench too. Torque is 18 ft/lb, that's what I use, and it's always stubborn to remove next time. But quality socket and long handled wrench makes it maneagable.
