My EV range has changed

    im in the Tampa Bay Area for the winter and have noticed that the expected EV range has increased from 25-26 miles to 31+ miles. I’m guessing that the flat terrain is the cause of the increase as opposed to my home driving in the mountains of Va.

    A lot of our trips are made on all electric. When refueling this past weekend, the Fuelly app thought I had missed a fillup since I had gone 950 miles and only used 7.5 gallons.

    cool! i notice that in our hybrid as well, gas mileage goes up as we hit the warmer and flatter lands of the carolina's vs the cold hills of new england.

    I'm in Long Island and I've actually noticed my milage go down a bit. I was getting around 24 EV miles on my morning commute to work. With some colder weather here and there and regularly going at speeds around 60mph+ I get around 21-22 miles. I bought my car in Dec so I've yet to experience warm weather driving. I'm hoping I get into the 26-28 rage when warm weather hits.

    Still doing well overall as I've filled up twice and I have over 1600 miles on the car so far. My office is installing a plug for me in the next week or so that I will be able to plug in at work for free. So over a month of driving home from work with no charge and still only filled up twice. I'll probably fill up once every other month once my plug gets installed!

    Change is a constant, folks. Temperatures and usage just messes it all up. I've stopped worrying about any of it. Got only 19 miles out of the EV side yesterday from a full charge in 17 degree F weather (no heater, no seat warmer, no steering wheel warmer - nothing but radio). Not that I expected any more than that. And I was happy I even got that much out of it, frankly. Yet afterwards when I plugged it back in, it reported 30.8 miles. That's also odd, since all winter it keeps reporting 30.x plus, and I haven't got even close to that in the last 15 runs. Again, not trying to figure it all out -- I just plug and go on my happy way.

    Summer (but not 90+ degrees summer) I have scored 31 miles. Some here have reported waaay more, like 40. What I haven't yet noticed is a big change in charging times. My L2 charger always gets the job done between 1:55 and 2:05, from 20 degrees to 85 degrees. That doesn't sound correct, according to the manual, but that's what it has been.

    I have made 22 mile range go over 24 miles with a little hyper milling.

    I’m averaging around 34 EV miles per charge right now in Utah because of our unseasonable mild winter. Temps are running around 50 degrees during the day .

    34 is some very good EV for a Prime. You're doing something right.

    I had gotten as high as 38.4 in EV / was averaging about 31.5 on a full charge when our first REALLY cold snap hit us in early December. Since then, EV range has been in the low 20s for the most part. On the "brighter" side of things, though:

    When in HYBRID mode, the worst MPG so far on a fairly long, in-town trip of 12 miles, was 47.1... about 6 miles each way with a two-hour stay at a birthday party in between. The temp was about 15 degrees that day. On a similar trip, our '08 Prius MIGHT have managed 35 MPG....

    ev range is based on acceleration, number of stops, speed, terrain and weather.

    The same thing happened to me, the report was 30+ on several cold days. Then I figured out for more than half the trip I was not in ev mode but hybrid due to the cold.

    i think it's fabulous that the prime is so quiet and smooth, you can't tell what mode you're in.(y)

    Wear warmer clothing, use the heater less often, with a lower setting.

    The heated seats and steering wheel can help

    The heater uses plenty of watts which will reduce your range.

    My wife always gets startled when the gas engine kicks in. Particularly noticeable when climbing steep hills. Easy cruise on the flat is barely noticeable.

    I am up to 32 mile range since the weather here in NY has gotten a little warmer. In dead of winter I was getting about 26

    Yesterday, in the high winds and rain, I could only get 19 miles range on the battery.
    Today, back to 32.

    This is just to confirm what bisco said;

    I know I only drive a 2008 Gen II, but the relatively (read truly) sub-zero Celsius freezing weather in the UK has seen my mpg drop as low as 54.0 mpg (UK) as of Friday. This from driving in -4c temperatures, on icy slippery roads, and in my local area, being forced to “Taxi” my way to the gritted main roads at 3mph over snow bound roads that had not been salted. It’s worth noting I also purposely increased onboard cabin temperature to 24c for the duration - I normally keep it at a maximum of 21c in deep winter and 19c at all other times.

    I didn’t even drop as low at 54.0 mpg (UK) in the last few winters - but then, this is the first time I’ve driven my Prius in proper snowbound sub zero winter conditions.

    The vehicle has otherwise performed flawlessly!
