One question i have is, is the loud lifter taps normal? Driving under acceleration i can really hear them. At idle i have the sewing machine sound, a lot like my old Scion xB. I have been looking for one for some time, i was able to pick one up today for $4K, since im in NYC its hard to find a good on that is not beat to bits or has rust and crust all over the place. This one has 104K miles and was bought new in SoCal, it spent its entire life there till just recently when the owner moved to Manhattan. Spotless carfax and full maintenance history since new with everything done at Toyota and by the book. Oil changes on time, AC condenser replaced, various other maintenance done, no dings, stains, broken plastic or other problems. I might have paid too much but you will never find one around New York city like this, in this condition for this price, BUT I DID.. lol. Others with 150k+ are $5K
Welcome to PriusChat!! Without hearing the engine in question it would be difficult to say Have you checked all of the fluids; oil, radiator (not overflow tank), and the inverter reservoir for proper levels? Sounds like you found a great deal on a perfect CA car
ill make a video, and yes all the fluids are spot on, i took a listen to other videos on youtube and they sound similar. But yeah, ill make a video tomorrow.
Without knowing the oil, it would difficult to judge on-line anyways. Full-syn generally quiets valve noise but they are adjustable so they could be getting out of spec but..... at only 100k miles they should still be in reasonable spec. FWIW
i have full history from Toyota of Manhattan and Toyota of Toyota of Anaheim, every single oil change since new is documented. 5W30 each time. This car was only serviced by Toyota. One thing i did notice also was, when first coming out to the car after it sits for a while i put my foot on the brakes and hear one "brake bark" I never hear it again when stopping or anything like that. Just after the car sits and i get in to start it up. Well maybe when backing up, but i think thats just the pads grabbing. Looking over the history i see the water pump was replaced at 60K, the axles seals were replaced twice, the AC condenser was replaced at 98K
You have to pay extra attention to this car and monitor for serious oil burning issues. Check every 500 miles and add when needed. I had a 2006 that sounded like a sewing machine and it burned a good amount of oil in 5000 miles. If the car burns too much oil, then it'll kill the catalytic converter. That will cost $2000 in N.Y.and CA
Brake bark...Mine did that all the time...actuator bark...If it gets to be constant...then it will need replaced...usually it "barks" when its colder outside...my 2004, and 2009 barked alot in winter ...not so much in summer...my 2004 is in Alabama now and the daughter says there is no barking....(300,000 miles on it)...Only barking is from the dogs...
Both of mine rattle. I think it's because they are Atkinson's cycle engines. I was worried at first, but it's usually normal.
That's the sound of a car that has seen dealer dino vat oil changes it whole life. Go get some Mobil 1 10-30 and a factory filter. The car takes 3.6 quarts with new filter.
