i had similar sounds coming from my old stick shift corolla, but that only had started after i had once driven the car with no engine oil. Am sure that has not happened with the prius, what else xould it be?

someone had recommended to get the fuel injection system so i poured a bottle of the cleaner available at auto zone, i gotta agree that has helped regain some power helping the fuel efficiency, however the trrrrrrrrrrrr sound while accelerating has not gone.

Update! The sound is pretty much gone after transmission oil change. Theoretically I feel like since the oil was old the transmission was not free, hence when I would press the gas pedal the engine would generate proportionate power but that power was not able to pass on to the axle efficiently, this lost power was being dissipated from the engine somehow generating this trrrrrrrrrrrrr sound.

I got the transmission fluid change done at Meineke ($100 labor + $ 45 oil & washers from Toyota). I know even $ 100 is way too much after I saw a video on how easy it is to change this oil. I even tried it myself, got all the tools but was not able to raise the car enough with jacks alone so decided to have it done at Meineke as this was the most convenient location for me, there was another location who was willing to change for $45 but I was not able to take it there, Firestone would not use my Oil that I got from Toyota, Jiffy Lube would not work on a prius's transmission as it does not have dipstick. My Prius is back to normal.

Thank everyone for contributing valuable advises specially Patrick Wong and uart.

Glad you feel your car benefited from the ATF fluid change.

If you had the tools for the job and only lacked a way to safely raise up the car - then instead of paying $100 to your service shop you could have gone to Costco, bought a good hydraulic floor jack and a pair of jackstands, and received some change back. But at least it is done now.

I don't know why the noise level would change after the ATF fluid change unless the original fluid level was low. Did you notice any fluid leaks around the transaxle housing or where the axle half-shafts come out of the transsaxle case?

Regarding the portions of your quoted text I highlighted in bold: sometimes working with pros can be like pushing rope. What is the fluid for second gen? Is it Toyota ATF-WS?

Considering Toyota tells you to use a very specific fluid, and you offer to supply it, for Firestone to refuse to put it in is just crazy. And Jiffy Lube's stupidity is likely a blessing in disguise.

I've done ours myself, a couple of times now, with embarrassingly low km's. With a floor jack and safety stand setup, it takes me maybe 3 hours, from start to finish. I'm typically doing an engine oil and filter change at the same time. And I'm taking my sweet time, no rush, no clock ticking.

Our third gen has a plastic panel on the underside, I prefer to remove that completely, eats up some time. And I don't want to rush, hang around under there, look at the CV boots, check for leaks, etc. And I'll let fluids drain, go back in the house, just let them run down to a drip.

A pro, doing only the transaxle fluid, with a hoist, and knowledgeable of the procedure, tool requirement and the torque values would take under 45 minutes.

Patrick, My car is Prius 2005 (driven 75K). I am facing the same problem with noise after 40 mph and an oil change. I did the oil change and replaced my air filter at walmart for $70. I am thinking of handing it over to toyota service, but afraid, they might rip me off. I have read the thread. is it wheel bearing problem or ATF replacement ?

double check your air filter box/hose connections.

I'm surprised at the Jiffy Lube policy....they usually take any service job and, at least here in So.Calif., have been repeatedly caught doing absolutely nothing to customers' cars while charging top dollar. Not merely stupid, but really stupid con artists.

While I agree about temp really mattering with MPGs, the rest is kind of a lot of BS. I've lived in ND for 50+ years. It's hit -30 maybe 4-5 times in my entire life. -70?? Please. The sub zero cold really only lasts about 4 months here and the "average" temp isn't even close to a negative number in ANY month. Stop with the hyperbole.

You realise that post was made coming up for 4 years ago, and that particular member has not been on PC for little over a year?

Sounds like a rotating cyclical noise. Wheels, brakes, bearing, cv axle, anything that will spin while accelerating. You should get things checked by whoever so you can at least pin point the noise and go from there.

Receipts for the weather? I don't think the poster is calling BS on your MPG, more the claims about the ND weather.
I think the comment is being made about your categorisation of the average temps for winter in ND.

Caveat: the temps may have been colder for the winter of 2014 when the post was made.

Using current data* for January (the coldest month), the range (of the coldest city I could see, Bottineau ND) seems to be between 17 ºF and -4 ºF. (-9 ºC and -20 ºC). However, the average for the year for the same city is between 50 ºF and 27 ºF (10 ºF and -3 ºF).

So I can see where the poster is coming from.

As a point of note, the temperature that I personally observe the Gen 2 Prius takes a turn, is around 10 ºC (50 ºF) or less. From this point it is hard to get outstanding MPG results. I can't speak for the Gen 3 Prius, which it seems both posters are running, or the Gen 4 Prius.

The gen 3 pkg V I had got 24mpg any temp below 36 with the hvac set at 70. My 2016 its a struggle to get 40mpg in the same temps. On warmer days when temps are 40 it seems to perform better than the gen 3 but cold weather still affects it a lot sadly.
