Given my tendency to be more than just a little accident-prone--I think I'll just stick with the mechanical key method. I can just hear the AAA/ER call using the pulling-my-arm-out-of-closing-window would likely engender...Not to mention how likely it would be that I would drop the fob back into the car at the same time...

Boy that sure would look funny if your arm got caught doing that! I think I would have to go home and get my digital camera to snap a few shots for the folks here at priuschat...and then help you get out.

All you need to do is change the sign to: "A/C is on to keep FEROCIOUS MAN-EATING GUARD DOG comfortable".. Both problems solved.. Of course, replacing the fluffy pink collar with one of those spiked jobs would probably also help..

Not with the fob and the smartkey system.

My wife has at times left her purse in the car and we left at the same time to go into the store.

I couldn't lock the car until the purse was removed. It took me a while to realize what the problem was.

OTOH, I'll have to try to lock the car with the key with the car running to see if it can be done.

Depends on how far the arm was out. Chances are, the door lock would still be within reaching distance.

However, one wonders about someone who retracts their arm, then quickly sticks their head back inside the window before it completely closes to see if they left their key inside the car.

IOW, another urban legend is born about someone winning a Darwin Award by choking themself to death using their own car window.

 

I found this out for the first time this weekend. We left the car ( I thought I turned the car off). While walking away I pressed the door lock button on my smart key and the car wasn't making any "door lock" noises. I was confused so went to see what was up and it turns out I left the car on. That's a crappy feature that your car can still run without the key nearby, no? Especially because the car doesn't make regular car noises for you to know if you shut it off when departing. So meanwhile, the doors aren't locked and the car is running....perfect scenario for a car thief.

The alternative to using the mechanical key to lock the front door with the power 'on' is to lower the driver's side window, exit the vehicle, reach in and lock the doors (manually or electrically), then auto-raise the driver's door and quickly remove your arm before it closes. And, just like locking the car with the mechanical key, the mechanical key is then the only way to get back into the car using this method, as well

I do remember reading about this happening with a power sunroof - some young child stood up so their head was sticking out the top and then pressed the close button I don't think it was an urban legend...I read about it in the newspaper (though you do have to be careful!)

I am SHORT. If the window was far enough down for me to still reach the lock from the outside, the problem would NOT exist! I'd have to be on tippy toes to be stuck...and the little dog couldn't even reach my fingers to lick 'em...
