I joined the club, stuck at 299,999

I believe @Texas Hybrid Batteries repairs the combo meters for $150.

There is a well reported odometer glitch for the 2005 and 2006 Prius models -- the odometer maxes out at 299,999.The dealer either didn't know it's a design flaw that's been well reported or was hoping you were an ignorant owner he could take advantage of. I'd find a new dealer.

 

It is still well outside any warranty from Toyota. Changing dealers would not save much money, IMHO.

 

I'd go elsewhere to have it fixed even if that dealer was the same price. I was referring to the fact that the dealer didn't apparently know by now it's not a sensor that needs to be troubleshooted. He either doesn't know the product or he's taking advantage of the owner. That has nothing to do with the expense of replacing the odometer.

 

There's probably no legal traction in this, but I think the argument could be made that the product was defective from the get go.

What's the limit on a traditional, mechanical odo, a million?

 

What was the designed lifespan of the Prius? 10 years / 250K miles seems reasonable.

 

There are company's that can set the counter to what ever you want; for cars where thay have to replace the odo meter. Just let it set to 0 and start counting again.

 

I believe it just freezes at 299,999 and does not reset to 0. They only other option would be to use one of the Trip meters, but they can be reset and they reset if 12 V power is lost.

 

In the Netherlans there is a company that can put in what ever you want. If you let them set it to 0 jou can drive an other 299999 with your car and own odo meter.

 

Are there any regulations about that, rolling it back? Or is this the price of "progress", going to digital odometers?

I guess the old-style odometers were rolled back as well.

 

I remember there was a youtuber was trying to record hitting the 300k mark. It stuck at 299,999 and he was like what!?!?!?. LOL

 

Is there a sim ceiling on first gen odo?

 

I wonder how many taxis are stuck at 299,999 miles. Sounds like a fleet defect that the Feds should issue a recall over.

 

I think NHTSA might have a hard time making a recall order like that stick, since there hasn’t been a federal requirement for speedometers or odometers in passenger cars since the former FMVSS No. 127 was revoked in 1982. See Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards; Speedometers and Odometers; Controls and Displays, 47 Fed. Reg. 7250 (Feb. 18, 1982).

 

I missed the memo. My membership in SAE lapsed in 1981. I'm still working from the 1978 handbooks.

 

Personally, I would leave it. Just know it has a shoot load of miles. It's not like it would make a difference at resale.

I recall some old Ford digital gauges from the late 90's that almost do the same exact thing. Instead of sticking at 299,999 they rollover back to 200,000.
