Key Not Detected

some have reported that the circuit board seems to have gone bad.

 

Also seen discussion in other threads that some batteries from overseas are defective. Might want to check the make of the battery and if not a known manufacturer, it might be worth getting one and trying that.

 

Under dash button was on the generation 2 models, not the 3's.

 

I removed a cigarette lighter phone charger and the car works fine now. I know some really mess up my radio reception. Maybe it messed up the fob reception??

I’m having the exact same problem minus the key fob battery dying. This is my second aux battery in 4 months. It starts to flash the sign that key is not detected and a month later it won’t start what did you end up doing?

 

sounds like you have a parasitic drain, how many miles on her?

 

I have the same issue with my 2011, and my daughter's 2011. Both batteries are at 3v per dvm, and the problem is intermittent. Must touch the start button with the key when the problem occurs, but otherwise the car drives normally. Seeing all of these posts and having 2 cars with the same issue, I wonder if this is a common manufacturing defect. After just spending over $600 fixing another problem in which I could not get the car in Drive or Reverse, I am not willing to pour more money into resolving this issue. I will never buy another Prius or Toyota.

 

Do you mean the power port in the center console? Curiously, I have a GPS plugged in the power port, and I've received several "Key Not Detected" warnings since.

 

Turns out my extra key is working ok with no problems in a couple days driving.

 

I was having the same problem and after hours of trial and error, this fixed it. Now my key fob works fine.

 

Hi! I have a 2008 Prius that's been having some coolant flow valve issues and while preparing to take it to the repair shop, I took it through a car wash that I've visited several times prior, with no issues. This time, since leaving there, my fobs are not recognized - to the point of not unlocking or starting the car without pressing the appropriate buttons or inserting the fob in the slot to begin ignition. I'm thinking I must have, in wiping the interior of the dash during the car wash (!) - reaching over things, pressed something I should not have and the fobs don't work. Just prior to the wash - everything was perfect! Any suggestions? The repair shop was able to scan and find out that the car is "seeing" the fobs just not responding/sensing to open/operate as before. Curiouser and curiouser! I'll appreciate any other assistance you can offer! Many thanks!

there is an sks on/off button on the dash below the steering wheel.
if not that, test your 12v, it might have run down in the car wash and is in a low state of charge.

 

I have a similar problem.

I turned off my 2011 Prius Gen 3 yesterday after driving for about 10 minutes and my door ajar alarm and light both came on. I looked at the dash and it came up with the key not detected message. The lock, unlock, and panic buttons were disabled and I could not lock/unlock my door unless I used the embedded key. When I got in the car or put the key up to the window, the message went away and I was able to start the car with no issue. I replaced the fob battery with a brand new Energizer battery and it didn’t fix it. I gave up and locked the car overnight, woke up, and everything was normal at first, but after driving for another 10 minutes, I had the same problem.

My car doesn’t have the SKS reset button like older models and I’m really just stumped. Took it to my mechanic and he wasn’t sure what was going on but suggested I call a locksmith to reprogram the fob. Also called a dealership but haven’t heard back from them yet.

Anyone know what might be going wrong or how to fix it? Thanks!

 

I am having the same issue. I have an 2015 Prius. The key is not being detected. It is an intermittent problem. Dealer has not been able to fix it. I have been there three times. One time they saw the problem but it corrected itself while they were analyzing it. The other two times they could find no problem because it was working.

 

It may be too late for current searchers, but I hope it works for new people . I had same problem for a while . I found out the cause was after market Bluetooth device that I had installed to listen to connect cellphone to radio. Remove all after market wireless devices including back-up cams ,

This just happened to me tonight! I swapped the 12 volt adapter from the console box to the 12 volt adapter up front by the dash, then I drove to the grocery store and I couldn't get the thing to lock and it kept telling me that the key was not present.

Searched the forum, found this thread, pulled the adapter out of the socket, and boom! Fixed!! Thanks guys!

 

So I just had the same issue with the "Key Not Detected" showing when I turned my Prius off. And then could not lock my car with the fob or by touching the handle while having the fob.
I finally got home for the evening and gathered up all my things, including disconnecting a device I had charging in the usb outlet between the seats. As soon as I did this the interior cabin lights got slightly brighter and now the "Key Not Detected" is gone and it will let me lock the car again. I believe the device was drawing power when the car was off so the Prius registered it as the car being in use and therefore wouldn’t let me lock it because of that. So that’s my long winded way of saying to make sure you don’t have anything plugged in that may be drawing off the car without you even realizing….
